A magnificent Collage Workshop with Jacqui Stockdale this Sunday gone. Very nice indeed to be back in the studio with students chafing at the bit to channel the surreal onto their paper.

Remember the good ole days when you would waltz up the stairs and put on your smock. Have a wine if it was a night class, set out your paints and brushes, feel nervous excitement?

The biggest casualty to the trap of perfectionism is often our artwork. Just think of all the amazing projects that never came to light because we listened to another voice - the wrong voice. Listen to the stories of other artists who have found ways out of self-sabotage in Understanding Perfectionism, by Antrese Wood. It's brilliant.

If you want to know how something is done you need to follow in the footsteps.
One of the techniques of classical art training is to copy the work of a great artist. This is a powerful tool in learning. We encourage students to transcribe the images that inspire them. This practice is a brilliant way to learn how to understand composition, structure, colour combinations and rhythm.

Beginner Oil paint colour tips:
The 5 essential colours to use are:
-Cadmium Lemon: A true yellow that doesn’t lean to orange or green.
-Naphthol Red: A modern primary red with an impressively high chroma. Adopted like many modern organics from the automotive industry, Naphthol is a clean alternative to cadmiums for mixing.
- Ultramarine Blue: The purest blue, originally sourced from lapis lazuli, it was a decadent and expensive pigment, now available as a synthetic one with fabulous results
- Burnt Amber: Important as a basic colour as it gives the nicest dark brown that is very hard to be reproduced with the primaries alone.
-Titanium zinc white: Most useful all-purpose oil painting white. An excellent mixing white, combines the soft texture and opacity of Titanium with the creamy transparency of Zinc for less “chalky” mixtures.
Try these 5 pigments and combine them together, you can create a wide number of colours.

Most of us can agree that the past year has been a trying one, 6 lockdowns and counting, the absence of normality, of human touch or social events can very easily leave us feeling tired, restless and frustrated. It is often seen though that through adversity our survival instinct tunes into our most creative mode.
The studio will be patiently waiting to open its doors again once it’s safe to do so, and I’ll be delighted to welcome you all, till then keep creating.
We are brewing something exciting at Artclassco, as promised the second half of the year will see collaborations with local artists who will be hosting workshops of various themes. Keep your eye on this space for upcoming announcements.
At artclassco we encourage students to explore and try themes and techniques that interest them. We are always amazed at how talented our students are and are proud to see them produce pieces with soul and heart :)
