The RACGP Rural Awards recognise outstanding achievements and exceptional individuals for their contribution to rural and remote general practice.
This year we are seeking nominations for the Rural Medical Student Bursary Award.
The Rural Medical Student Bursary Award is awarded to a medical student who is a member of a rural health students' club at an Australian university who submits the best essay (maximum 1200 words) on a rural and remote health topic.
The 2024 essay topic is: In remote and rural communities all health disciplines work closely together to get the best outcomes they can for their community with limited resources.
Describe a model that you have seen in MMM3-7 where the teamwork across all health disciplines leads to great outcomes.
Each essay nomination is judged on the following criteria:
demonstrated understanding of rural general practice;
demonstrated evidence of innovative thinking;
interest in a career in rural general practice;
a written statement outlining the ways in which the bursary would support professional development.
The Rural Medical Student Bursary Award includes registration to attend the GP24 conference in Perth and presentation of a commemorative trophy at the RACGP national awards ceremony.

🔥 ISSUE #11 IS HERE!!!🔥
This week we present a special issue on the Voice Referendum.
Key facts:
The idea came from Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people. This is a big deal for us & Australia should consider the concerns of over 83% of First Nations People.
The Voice will be made up of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Representatives who will be elected by Indigenous Australians. The body will include young and older people from every state.
The Voice gives advice – THERE IS NO VETO POWER (i.e. Parliament & Government still have the final say)
The Closing the Gap Campaign:
The Closing the Gap Campaign is not on track. According to the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), The Gap is failing because “there has been little improvement in the partnerships with Indigenous people, or in putting culture at the centre of initiatives”. Maybe it’s time to start considering the invaluable advice from Australia’s First Nations People.
1. Reduction of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander suicides is not on track, it is worsening.
2. Number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander babies born at a healthy weight is not on track
3. Number of young Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people graduating high school is not on track.
4. Number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people completing tertiary education is not on track.
5. Number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander youth undergoing training or being employed is not on track.
6. Number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people living in non-crowded homes is not on track.
7. 15% increase in sea covered by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people’s legal rights is not on track
It is extremely clear that the current approach is not working.
