Unleash the best Miyako Island.

Away from the busyness of Tokyo’s neon-lit streets lies Okinawa. A stone-throw away from the capital, this Island off the coast of Japan is a vastly different place. Situated here is Miyako-Jima, the largest of the Miyako Islands in the Okinawa Prefecture; a place full of sunshine, beaches, relaxation, and one hell of a night out. Acclaimed photographer Ryu Ika [] adores this isolated Island, and together with PAM [, they captured a night to remember and immortalized it in a recent editorial.
Photographer Ryu Ika, originating from Mongolia, needs no introduction to many. As a sharpshooter photographer, she creates a unique and utterly delectable vision within her work that sits on the knife edge of gritty and mesmeric. Effortlessly capturing the every day, her work transcends the norm, and instead transpires the satirical world of the bizarre, the witty, and the charming. Despite being captured through a lens, their work is incredibly grounded and human - and it’s why we resonate so highly with it.
Drawn to the Miyako Islands, this being their 3rd project there, Ryu explains how she was fascinated by the people.
Rather than wanting to do a fashion shoot, PAM and Ryu wanted to capture the people around her: her friends she met during travels there, people they met along the way on a night out, and finally randomers at an Izakaya. Ryu explains how the Island is so small that everyone knows everyone there, and they dance, sing, and drink, and this is exactly what she captures in her art with PAM.
People can be seen to party, get drunk, and laugh, but behind all is a subtle hint of melancholic reality; a sense of escapism that is only found in the drunken eyes of a happy partygoer.
Ryu doesn’t look to hide this side of life, but instead empower it, break down barriers, and connect with the isolated lifestyle of the people on Miyako Island.
