In an exciting weekend of Finals the Flyers made their mark, winning the last game of the WNBL Championship series against the Lynx, grabbing the championship for 2024. Whilst Melbourne United had an impressive win against the Tasmania JackJumpers in the first of their best-of-five NBL Championship Series.

Chris Anstey has made a bold statement – picking his top 3 after round 16. He has put a lot of confidence in the newly branded Melbourne United (formerly the Melbourne Tigers). On 1st January in round 13 of NBL24 the Tasmanian JackJumpers shot out to a 20-8 lead against the New Zealand Breakers in the first quarter, keeping their fans’ hopes alive. The game fluctuated back and forth until the JackJumpers seemed to have a win in sight, leading by 4 points with three minutes to go in the last quarter. But all hope was dashed in those last minutes as the NZ Breakers surged ahead to win.

It’s probably fitting that the nation recognised as the true spiritual home of Netball (Australia) has now won this year’s World Cup championship in South Africa. This makes it a clean sweep of all major tournaments and trophies in the last four years – the Commonwealth Games Medal, the Constellation Cup and now the World Cup – when Netball Australia has continued to cop some pretty solid criticism. So, really, now there is one more goal. Bring on the Olympics, the sport of netball has arrived.

As if to answer the nay-Sayers to the National competition, Netball Australia has granted its eighth Super Netball Licence to SEN – Craig Hutchison’s nationwide sports and entertainment network. This is a great confirmation in the sport of netball as to Australia’s leading womens’ sport. The team will be based in Melbourne’s South East corridor with its new name to be announced prior to the commencement of next season.

The Adelaide Thunderbirds have won this year’s Super Netball Grand Final against the NSW Swifts – in extra time 60:59. An exciting game, a real nail biter – down to the wire but in the end the Thunderbirds prevailed. The Swifts got to the Grand Final the hard way through the Preliminary Playoff and to come so close was a truly magnificent effort. Congratulations to the Thunderbirds, consolation to the Swifts. What a game! Netball truly was the winner.

The Swifts, having been defeated by the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the previous week, went into the game as decided underdogs to the West Coast Fever – but win they did, prevailing over The Fever by 1 solitary point, 65-64. The last piece of the jigsaw will see either the West Coast Fever or the NSW Swifts meet the Adelaide Thunderbirds in this year’s Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final to be held July 8 at the John Cain Arena in Melbourne. The Fever held the Vixens comfortably for the duration of their game with the Vixens, although valiant in defeat, falling short 64-57. Can the Swifts, as Minor Premiers turn the tables and prevail over the current 2022 Premiers the West Coast Fever.

At the same time last weekend it was Collingwood Netball Team’s swansong – its last appearance in Super Netball. To everyone’s surprise they managed to pull off one of their best wins against finals contender the West Coast Fever. Vale Collingwood, a great game. For the first time in NBA history the Denver Nuggets are this year’s champion team. After defeating the Miami Heat in game 5 the Nuggets won the series 4 games to 1. It’s that time of year again and the NBA Playoffs are progressing quickly to the next phase of the ‘Big Dance’. Surprise packet, the Miami Heat made it through to the second round where, having beaten the New York Knicks, they faced the Boston Celtics and needed to prevail against them to keep their phenomenal run to the Finals going. But the Celtics have had other ideas.

Basketball’s international ‘Holy Grail’ is scheduled to be hosted this year in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines from August 25 to September 10. As an interesting side note Australia has not returned to the Philippines since July 2018. It should make for interesting times after the infamous ‘basket brawl’ event that certainly changed the dynamics between the two teams.
