Introducing… SWIFT!

SWIFT is our newest treatment to tackle stubborn warts. SWIFT utilises microwave therapy to deliver consistent, clean, and convenient treatments, backed by scientific studies.

How does it work?
SWIFT microwaves pe*****te the skin, and only affect a targeted area. Unlike other treatment it does not break
the surface of the skin and destroy tissue from the point of application - like cryotherapy, salicylic acid, or laser
ablation. This means no time off work or sports, and no need to keep the area dry.

How effective is it?
A recent study from the European Journal of Dermatology produced amazing results with 94% of lesions clearing within three treatments, and zero reported complications. Most clinics using the recommended protocol have an 83% resolution rate.

Does it hurt?
Like most wart treatments there is some discomfort during the consult, most patients describe a sharp pain which lasts only 1-2 seconds. Most patients have no pain upon finishing the treatment.

How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments required varies patient to patient, however in most cases the wart will resolve in three treatments a month apart.

Cold and chilly weather has arrived in Melbourne! With winter right around the corner, Chilblains are becoming a common cause of concern with clients at the clinic. However, Coburg Podiatry is here to help keep those tootsies in tip top condition throughout winter!

Chilblains are small, itchy, red patches that can appear on the hands and feet after exposure to the cold. They can also lead to blistering, swelling, burning and colour changes from red to dark blue. Usually, chilblains reoccur seasonally for years and certain risk factors can increase susceptibility.

These include:
• Wearing clothing that is tight or exposes skin to the cold
• Low BMI
• Environment and season
• Having poor circulation
• Having a systemic/autoimmune disease

Good news is that there are ways to manage painful symptoms of chilblains! The Do’s and Don’ts include:

DO
• Avoid being outside when it is cold or damp
• Wear warm, waterproof clothing, gloves and thick socks-preferably with natural, breathable fibres such as wool, cotton or bamboo
• Try some soothing creams/lotions to ease the pain and itching
• Have a paraffin wax treatment which is offered by Coburg Podiatry to help improve circulation

DON’T
• Put hands or feet under a heater to warm them up
• Run the hands or feet under hot water
• Scratch or pick at the skin

Please contact the clinic at www.coburgpodiatry.com.au or call us on 9386 2355 to book an appointment for further advice and management strategies to help with chilblains throughout the winter months!

Let’s talk about warts! Yes, they are a nuisance and yes, they are unsightly and can cause discomfort. There is good news though! They can be treated! So, what are warts and what causes them? Warts or medically referred to as ‘verruca’ occur as a result of the human papilloma virus (HPV).

The virus can be picked up due to:
• Use of public/communal showers or pools
• Skin trauma
• Weakened immune system due to illness or medications

The virus attacks the skin and presents as hard, painful lumps with pinpoint dark spots inside. Commonly they affect the bottom surface of the foot on areas of pressure such as the forefoot, heel, and toes. Good news is…warts can be fixed! Common treatment involves sharp debridement to remove the warty tissue, followed by the application of mild acids to burn the wart away. A few applications may be required as everyone’s warts are different and respond differently to treatment. Don’t put up with these painful little lumps anymore!

Experiencing pain at the front of the lower leg? There may be a possibility that you have undiagnosed ‘shin splints.’ The term shin splints, refers to pain along the lower half of the shin bone. The most common cause is inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tibia bone. Traction forces on the sheath from the muscles of the lower leg causes shin pain and inflammation.

The most common causes of shin splints are:
▪️Abnormal biomechanics (often excessive pronation)
▪️Inadequate footwear
▪️Running on hard surfaces
▪️Increasing training too quickly
▪️Sudden stops or starts or explosive movements

To diagnose shin splints, our podiatrists will conduct a comprehensive biomechanical assessment to determine any abnormal foot alignment issues. We can prescribe footwear for different foot types, assess if there is a need for custom foot orthoses to help improve foot function, and provide advice on how to safely return to activity.

Football season is back – So it means time for new boots!
With so many options on the market, deciding what is best can be a confusing and difficult process. Here are some tips to make the process easier;

◾️ Correct fit – The football boot should not only be the correct fit by length but also width. There are may ways to get the correct size but the simplest is to go to a retailer who offers a fitting service.
▪️For a narrow fit – Nike Mercurial V***r are one option.
▪️For a wider fit – New Balance Tekala or ASICS Lethal Ultimate IGS. A wide fit with a removable insole will also allow for a custom orthotic to be better accommodated.

◾️ Stud Pattern – Every boot has a different number and length of studs. Having more studs on the boot will allow pressure to be more evenly distributed under the foot. However different surfaces and ground conditions have different requirements, most manufacturers with options for Firm Ground (FG) and Soft Ground (SG). Firm Ground boots are often the most versatile stud pattern and will be the best all-rounder for Melbourne conditions.

◾️ Break Them In – Gradually increase the amount of wear in boots – never wear new boots on game day. Ensure they are worn in for at least two training sessions.

◾️See a Podiatrist – Last but certainly not least it is important that if you have any concerns before or throughout the season seek the advice of a professional. The beginning of the season is when early interventions can prevent a season riddled with pain and possible injury.

Here are Our Top Recommendations!!
◾️ASICS Lethal Ultimate IGS
◾️ASICS Lethal Testimonial
◾️ASICS Menace
◾️New Balance Tekala
◾️New Balance Viscro Pro
◾️Nike Tiempo
◾️Nike Mercurial V***r
◾️Adidas Predator
◾️Puma UItra 1.1
