You've might have noticed it has been raining a lot recently! The weather impacts our local athletes in more ways than one. They are unable to train and play as consistently as normal, which leads to their reaction times, balance and game fitness being affected. Add to this returning to slippery surfaces the chance of injury is increased.
Lateral ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in change of direction sports. 70% of those who experience an ankle sprain will sprain again. A good rehab program is essential to reduce your risk of re-spraining.
If you are returning to any sporting environment which involves change of direction such as netball, basketball or tennis, it is essential that you are assessed and advised by a physiotherapist on appropriate exercise and a successful return to sport process. Don't underestimate the impact of a "simple ankle sprain" to your ability to play competitively

At The Junction Village Physiotherapy, Fabiola, Sarah and Jane are all able to help you return to your sport with success.

Today marks the start of April Falls Month, and falls continue to be no laughing matter for our elderly and their loves ones. Falls are the country’s leading cause of injury hospitalisation and death, with hospital-related falls occurring more frequently in older people (AIHW, 2023). One in three people over 65 living at home experience a fall per annum. In 2021-2022, there were 233,000 hospitalisations following a fall, and in 2020-2021, sadly 5,800 deaths were caused by a fall (AIHW, 2023).

Physiotherapy has a critical role in improving function and mobility and preventing falls in aged care residents. There is an urgent need for investment in a falls-related fractures and hospitalisations prevention program through physiotherapy-led care in the community. Evidence suggests that 55 per cent of falls can be reduced, with a projected cost saving of $120 million per year if physiotherapy-led falls prevention programs are implemented among residential aged care facility participants.

Visit australian.physio/pre-budget to learn what urgent change we’re seeking from the government to prevent devastating falls occurring to our elderly population.

Resistance training is part of our recommended exercise guidelines. The good news is that while lifting heavier loads has lots of benefits for muscle and bone, this study showed that even low levels of resistance exercise has health benefits. The important thing is to be consistent. If you need help getting started or progressing your exercises, come and talk to Fabiola, Sarah or Jane 🙂

Fit for work does not mean fit for life
75 per cent of Australian adults do not meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, putting them at risk for chronic conditions, including back pain, heart disease, and cancer, as well as experiencing decreased wellbeing.

Research suggests that occupational physical activity (i.e., heavy physical work) alone does not provide the same health benefits as leisure time physical activity and is not a substitute for regular exercise.

At The Junction Village Physiotherapy we can work with you to provide practical ideas and a tailored program to help you achieve your physical goals for work and life. Let us help you be Fit for Work and Fit for Life.

August is National Tradies Health Month!
Whether you need help recovering from an injury or assistance to stay fit on the job, we can help!

A 'fair go’ for tradies has been a key concern following the pension age raise to 67 last month, with tradies already being disproportionately affected by workplace injuries and chronic conditions. August is Tradies National Health Month (TNHM) and this year’s theme focuses on the top reasons physiotherapists can help tradies to boost longevity so they work until they are ready to retire.

APA Occupational Health Physiotherapist Lucia Tsui MACP supports tradies who are experiencing problems consistent with the physical stressors of laborious work, many of which force tradies to take time off.

“People who experience more serious work-related injuries generally require time off, with the latest data showing 66 percent of those who experienced an injury taking leave to recover,” Lucia said.

TNHM is an opportunity for tradies to invest in their long-term health, but it is also a time for employers, family members, and friends to check-in and help support tradies to have a long, healthy life on the job.
