As per NSW Health guidance, masks are required to be worn in our practice at all times to protect the safety of our patients and staff.

COVID-19 cases remain high across NSW, driven by the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants. We are also seeing increasing flu cases.

Masks remain mandatory for all people over the age of 12 years in public hospitals, private health and residential aged care facilities.

We strongly recommend wearing masks in general practices and medical centres, disability care facilities, indoors and when you can’t physically distance.

Do not visit vulnerable people in high risk settings such as hospitals and aged care if you feel unwell. Get tested and stay home.

Do you know what you’re va**ng?

Ni****ne is found in many vapes and is very addictive with harmful effects on brain development.

The take-up of va**ng by young people is increasing. Research shows that 1 in 3 young people 16 – 24 years have vaped.

The ‘Do you know what you’re va**ng?’ campaign is aimed at young people aged 14-17 years who should not be va**ng or smoking.

Vapes are not safe.

Vapes can also contain the same harmful chemicals found in weedkiller, nail polish remover, bug spray and cleaning products.

Some great tips from medicine in motion if you or someone you know suffers from COPD

The role of exercise for COPD 🤔

What is COPD 💨
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common and treatable disease characterized by progressive airflow limitation and tissue destruction. It is associated with structural lung changes due to chronic inflammation from prolonged exposure to noxious particles or gases most commonly cigarette smoke. Chronic inflammation causes airway narrowing and decreased lung recoil. The disease often presents with symptoms of cough, dyspnea, and sputum production. Symptoms can range from being asymptomatic to respiratory failure.

What can exercise do for my COPD❓

Regular exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle, even if you have a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). You might feel like it is not safe, or even possible to exercise, but the right amount and type of exercise has many benefits. Benefits include
-       Improve health and wellbeing
-       Maintain fitness
-       Reduce breathlessness
-       Improve your circulation and help the body better use oxygen

What type of exercise is generally good for people with COPD❓

1.     Aerobic exercise is good for your heart and lungs and allows you to use oxygen more efficiently. Walking, biking and swimming are great examples of aerobic exercise. Try and do this type of exercise for about half an hour a few times a week.
2.     Strengthening: Strengthening exercises for the upper body are especially helpful for people with COPD, as they help increase the strength of your respiratory muscles.

When shouldn’t I exercise or how do I know when I am working too har❓
You should stop if you are
-       Experiencing chest pain
-       Out of breath
-       Feel nauseated
-       If you have a fever or infection

How often should I exercise
You should aim for 150 minutes of aerobic activity a week or 30 min a day. This can be split up throughout the day e.g., 3 x 10-minute bouts. Lastly, 2-3x resistance training sessions a week, hitting all major muscles 2-3x per workout.
