Prof Mark Jessell from the University of Western Australia presented on the relationship between the Guiana Shield and the West African Craton at the 12th Inter Guiana Geological Conference in Guyana. These are the focus areas for the South American Exploration Initiative ( ) and the West African Exploration Initiative ( ).

Lithium, Battery and Energy Metals Conference 2022 Following our highly successful Lithium, Battery, and Energy Metals Conferences in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, AusIMM and Murdoch University are excited to host this year’s conference.

Great news! The fourth stage of the West African Exploration Initiative (WAXI) begins today! WAXI is helping companies undertaking active exploration in West Africa. It will augment the exploration potential of the Leo-Man shield, which includes Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Morocco.

The project will continue previous work examining the mineral systems in the Birimian terranes and neighbouring Archean, Pan-African Meso-Proterozoic and Phanerozoic basins, characterising and evaluating the role of the lithospheric and crustal architecture on the development of mineral systems through time.

What value will this project bring to your tailings operations? We are holding a roundtable for Members to explore P1287. This project involves fibre-optic sensing technology that uses temperature, strain and acoustic/seismic data to monitor the integrity of embankments and tailings.

The outcome is a system capable of detecting subsurface changes in material properties within the whole volume of the embankment and adjacent tailings, prior to surface detection.

The hour of power delivered by our stellar panel of mining and space experts was just one of the highlights of the Amira Global Moon and Mining event in Adelaide, Australia, on Friday 2 September. Our sincere thanks to Doug Morrison (CEMI), George Coulloupas (Leonardo), Matt Pearson (Fleet Space Technologies), and Laura Spelbrink (Frontier SI) for their time and deep insights into the connections between the space and mining sectors. We have been asked to reconvene the panel to further the discussion, so watch this space!

The panel was preceded by an excellent tour of Lot Fourteen, which included the Institute of Machine Learning and the MIT Living Lab. These are sites where extensive work is underway in machine learning, AI, robotic vision, cybersecurity, and blockchain. Thank you to these organisations and their representatives for providing insights and facilitating valuable discussions.
