Your Yoga Practice, Props & Accessibility 🌿🌟

At Yoga Maya, we celebrate the adaptability of yoga, ensuring it is accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Props such as blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets, and chairs play a crucial role in making this possible.

Why do we love using props in our yoga practice?

🧡Comfort and Ease: Props may bring comfort to tight muscles, making poses more accessible and enjoyable.

🧡Stability and Support: They provide extra support in various poses, helping you maintain balance and reduce the risk of falls.

🧡Relaxation and Restoration: Props support the body in restorative poses, allowing you to relax more deeply and experience a greater sense of rest.

🧡Gradual Progression: Using props allows you to gently increase your flexibility and strength without straining your body.

🪑 Chairs for instance, are fantastic tools for those who might be new to the practice and find standing poses challenging for long periods of time, or maybe are coming back to the practice after injury or surgery and are trying to regain their strength and mobility.

Accessible yoga and using props in class benefits everyone, particularly those with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and those recovering from injuries. It helps improve strength, blood flow, and overall bone and muscle health. Additionally, it reduces stress and anxiety, promotes better sleep, and enhances mood and stamina.

Our teachers at Yoga Maya embody and promote these values on and off the mat and are here to guide you on how to use these props effectively, showing that every pose can be adapted to suit your unique body and needs.

🧡What’s your favourite prop to use? Let us know ⬇️🙏🏼✨

💕 Satya - Truthfulness in Yoga and Life 💕

In yoga, Satya means embracing truthfulness not just with others but also with ourselves. It’s about recognising and accepting our true feelings, capabilities, and needs. This honest self-assessment leads to greater self-awareness and personal growth, but can sometimes be really challenging with our conditioning, family structures and societal pressures!

✨ Practical Ways to Practice Satya:

💕 Self-Honesty: Check in with yourself regularly. Are you being true to your feelings and needs, or are you pushing them aside?

💕 Setting Realistic Goals: Be honest about what you can achieve. Setting realistic goals helps you stay motivated and prevents burnout.

💕 Authentic Communication: Speak your truth kindly but firmly. Whether it’s in your relationships or at work, clear and honest communication builds trust and respect.

💕 Listening to Your Body: During your yoga asana practice, listen to what your body is telling you. Respect its limits and honor its capabilities.

💕 Reflecting Daily or weekly: At the end of the day or week spend a few moments in reflecting on your actions and thoughts. Were you true to yourself?

Living with Satya means being real with ourselves, which in turn helps us lead more authentic, fulfilling lives. Remember, YOGA is about creating a truthful and compassionate relationship with YOURSELF.

🧡 Have you thought about Satya in this context before? Let us know the ways you honour this practice in your life ⬇️

🌕 Poetry on the Mat: Reflecting on Guru Purnima 🙏🏼

“Breath, the mindful breath, the rhythm, out and in, the wave that washes through our days, creating space for stillness, sorrow, joy, or exaltation. Full, then empty, ebb and flow, breath accompanies each step into the unknown. In the breath, the soul finds an opportunity to speak. Images or intuition, poetry or wordless wisdom come and go — no effort but to breathe and listen.”

- Dana Faulds

🙏🏼This poem speaks to the inner wisdom that flows from Sadhana. On this day of Guru Purnima, we honor the wisdom that flows from India and the light our teachers bring. Yet, importantly we recognise the shadows within the guru-shishya tradition. Some paths of learning are marred by pain and betrayal. Sometimes the hands we trust to guide us, have also harmed.

🌕Today, we hold space for reverence and healing, for those who have suffered under the guise of the guru. May our breath carry compassion, understanding, and the strength to reclaim our wisdom and inner light.

🙏🏼Guru Purnima though, extends beyond the tradition of Yoga. Celebrating Guru purnima and the guru-shishya parampara is across many fields of wisdom like music, dance, art and philosophy.

🌕 Today is a day to express our gratitude to all mentors and is also about acknowledging the guru within – our intuition and inner wisdom. Tuning in, listening to our inner voice, we may chose to send gratitude to all our teachers and guides in life.

📸 This beautiful photo depicts Haridwar, India in the early hours of the morning after the Ganga Aarti ritual was performed - it was taken by one of my own teachers in life, Saurabh on his recent trip back home in March 🧡🙏🏼

🌿✨Post Nurture Session reflections ✨🌿

As I finished a Nurture Session in studio today with a warm inner buzz, I found myself lost in thought gazing out the beautiful big window and reflecting on the deep sense of connection and community we nurture here at Yoga Maya.

🧡Each session is a reminder that our practice is more than just movement—it’s about coming together, supporting one another, and creating a space where everyone feels welcome.

Embracing this sense of connection and community, we’re reminding 😜 / inviting you to next week’s 🌟 EVENT 🌕Moon Flow & Chai☕️, inspired by Matthew Sweeney’s Moon Sequence also known as Chandra Krama.

🌕 Renowned and adored, this gentle, flowing form is designed to balance the dynamic practices like the Ashtanga Primary Series. It helps practitioners apply key yoga principles such as here and now awareness, letting go, balancing yin and yang, meditation, and a therapeutic individual approach.

🧡This sequence is adaptable for all practitioners, regardless of age, ability, or conditions. It includes variations in standing and sitting postures, emphasising opening the hips, reducing pressure on the wrists and shoulders, and allowing for more time in each posture.

☕️We’ll conclude with a deeply restful Yoga Nidra session, enjoy warm chai, and each participant will receive their own candle for 🕯️ Trataka ( candle gazing ) to take home. It’s an evening designed to nurture our spirits and foster meaningful connections within our community.

Kerry and I can’t wait to share this special evening with you.

💕In yoga, Ahiṃsā means practicing non-violence in thoughts, words, and actions. This principle extends to how we talk to ourselves. Negative self-talk can create mental barriers and stress, hindering our well-being and yoga practice. ✨

Psychology research shows that negative self-talk can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) highlights that replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations improves mental health and boosts self-esteem.

Here are some ways to practice loving self-talk:

💕Awareness: Notice when you’re being self-critical.

💕Compassion: Treat yourself as kindly as you would a friend.

💕Affirmations: Use positive statements like “I am enough.”

💕Gratitude: Focus on what you appreciate about yourself.

💕Self-Care: Engage in activities that nurture your mind and body.

Speaking to yourself with love enhances your mental health, self-acceptance, and overall well-being. Remember, YOGA is about cultivating a peaceful relationship and connection with YOURSELF. 💕

🌟🎈 Yesterday at Yoga Maya we hosted our Kids and Tweens end-of-term party! 🥳 🌟

🧡 Our kids and tweens crafted personal mandalas using wood, rhinestones, and intricate patterns. Creating mandalas is a mindful activity that assists in focusing, calming their minds, and expressing their creativity. Each mandala becomes a unique reflection of their inner world, promoting a sense of peace and self-awareness.

🧡 We enjoyed ‘mindful munch’ snacks, reminding us to eat with intention and savour every bite. Working in partners with balloons was not only fun but also a great way to build teamwork and enhance our mindfulness through play.

🧡 We ended with a “Web of Kindness” activity, weaving our community together with shared words of kindness and support. This practice fosters connection and a deep sense of belonging.

🧡 At Yoga Maya, we believe in nurturing both the body and the mind, and yesterday was a beautiful example of our community coming together to celebrate mindfulness and creativity. Thank you to all the wonderful kids and tweens for making it so special!

🌿✨ Poetry on the Mat ✨🌿

Dear Yoga Maya Family, in Nourish & Flow today we carried with us the wisdom of Morgan Harper Nichols:

✨”I will let life in.

✨I will not concern myself gathering gold and silver that can be taken from me.

✨I have to trust there is more to me that goes beyond what I can see.

✨There is more to me than what I know today.

✨I will stretch my hands up to the sky, to say, ‘I am afraid but I will try,’ remembering the sea was split in two the veil was torn in two so I could know deep within my soul, what it means to be Free.

✨I will not hold back, for Love has not held back on me.”

🧡On Sunday mornings we approach movement and mindfulness with the full expression of the Yogic framework - utilising the essence of presence and the power of inner courage. As we moved, breathed, and stretched we touched beyond the physical, encouraging curiosity, looking into the depths of our souls and the limitless potential within.

🧡 Whether you joined us today or are reading these words here and now, I invite you to feel for a moment the unwavering support of love that resides within you, urging you to live boldly and freely….

🧡Even if you do find it hard to connect to that part of yourself, it is there. Carry this poem with you off the mat. Trust in the unseen, the unspoken, and the unfathomable beauty that lies within you. 🪴

Thank you for sharing this journey with us.

With love,
Asha 🌸🧘‍♀️

We are really blessed and proud to be a part of such a diverse, compassionate understanding community.

As I’m heading toward the close of another university semester I’ve called out for support from YM teachers to cover my classes while I whittle away my assessments!

I’d like to introduce to Yvonne who will be covering my Ashtanga class this Saturday. Many of you who practice with Yvonne will know her and I’m sure will now be looking forward to what she will bring to your practice this weekend.

We also have the lovely Angela Black covering my ashtanga mini Wednesday morning with her fast flow vinyasa style which I’m sure will be a welcome change for some variety and diversity in your practices.

Wonderful Kerry Kerry Holborow will also be covering some of my classes over the next few weeks too. Kerry has a solid ashtanga practice.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy the contrast and variety all these incredible dedicated teachers will impart in their classes.

Thank you everyone for your continual love and understanding. I am grateful for you just as you are 🧡

We extend our thoughts, love, support and condolences to the friends and families affected by the tragic loss of the beautiful young human, "the sweetest soul who made everyone around him feel so much joy" who passed away following the car accident in Gooseberry Hill this week. It is so unfair to have our loved one taken from us, and when they are so young and full of vitality it is incomprehensible to even try and make sense of!

We extend our love and thoughts and support to the other two passengers in the car and it is with deep gratitude that they are still with us. As these two beautiful beings recover from their physical injuries they will also be carrying the weight and pain of trying to make sense of their actions, this accident and their loss.

We are grateful to those first responders who were there to be with these young people and help them in all the ways that was within their power to do so. Thank you. We know this experience will be part of you forever now too.

This is one of the most extreme dichotomy of gratitude for life lived and heart aching pain for life lost - of gratitude and pain which embodies the human struggle to balance these opposing forces. A universal human experience of balancing joy and sorrow.

Dealing with intense suffering should not be done alone. Yes, there are times we need to curl up alone, and other times we need to curl up and be held by another in the myriad of ways that we can be here for each other.

Our community is diverse - we are mothers, fathers, siblings, aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends. Some of us can only imagine the pain and what you must be going through, while others have experienced loss like yours. Some of us have bee responders and continue to give back to community in this way too. While your heartache is yours alone to feel, You are not alone.

Whenever you are ready we are here to offer you what we can in the way of supporting you through navigating these extreme unfair changes in your lives. The power of yoga, meditation, mindfulness and community will be here if you want it.

The journey of recovery through loss and grief has to take its own course and is different for all of us. In my experience over the years grief has fluctuated, intensified and then might rest dormant, and then can arise again with new and different layers of insight, emotions and pain. I have practiced yoga for many, many years and I am so grateful for how having a dedicated committed daily practice has helped me realise and feel my emotions. Helped me to see and understand myself, others and the world through a lens of compassion and charity while honoring my own experience too.

We cannot heal your pain or suffering, but we can be with you and be with your pain and suffering. We know we can do this because we do it with each other in our family and with our friends, and we have, and continue to do it with many of our students who practice with us and have told us this is how they've felt in our classes. This does not look like anything in particular and can be different for each of us.

To the families and friends of these three young men we would be honored to offer you some free yoga classes if you are ever interested and these will be available for you whenever you are ready - whether it is in a few months to a few years. Just reach out to us via email or messenger to make that first connection and we can set up your classes for you.

I have listened to many of you in our Yoga Maya community share your personal intimate struggles and life experiences with me. As teachers we hold your sharing in confidence and we are grateful you feel safe and trusting in those moments to share and release even if it's just a tiny bit of what you are carrying.

This is what we have learned to understand from observation and through what is spoken to us from our students. There is much in this practice that can go unspoken but is deeply nourishing for the soul and supportive for our personal journeys.

Leaving love here for each and every one of you X

🌿 Samatva Sadhana: Your Saturday Morning Ritual🌿

Have you noticed this gem on our timetable and felt curious?…For a nourishing start to your weekend we invite you to our 7:30 am class, led by Studio Co-owner Tammy 💖

Our cozy morning gathering, available in-studio or online, offers a gentle flow inspired by the Pawanmuktasana Series from the North Indian Schools of Yoga. 🧡

🧡 Samatva Sadhana is crafted to nurture your joints and ease tension throughout the body.

🧡 In yoga, Prana is considered the vital life force energy that flows through the body in channels called nadis. These nadis are described in a similar way to the body’s nervous system in modern science, which transports signals throughout the body.

🧡 This series emphasises nourishment and relaxation for both body and mind, stimulating this subtle energy within us. Unlike many modern asana practices, our focus isn’t solely on flexibility or strength but achieving a balance of mental and physical harmony.

🌸 Embrace the perfect blend of movement and mindfulness to start your day with nourishment. 🧘🏽‍♂️ See you on the mat!

✨Needing a mid week pick me up? 6pm this evening at the Studio is the lovely Tam with Easy Flow.

Each week may have a focus, which could be working with the subtle body, an energising Pranayama (breath control) or particular part of the body, which can build up to a more challenging pose. As always, placing emphasis on listening to your own body and it’s needs - choosing to leave what doesn’t serve you.

This class will suit mixed ability levels. Beginners welcome. Bookings via punchpass✨
