NBCF funds world-class research focused on better understanding how to prevent and detect breast cancer early, how to stop the progression and recurrence of breast cancer and how to effectively treat hard-to-treat and metastatic breast cancers – research that ultimately save lives.

NBCF-funded researcher, Dr Sharissa Latham’s pursuit of a career in science was fuelled by her grandmother’s breast cancer diagnosis. Hear from her on why funding from NBCF towards breast cancer research is so important.

The strength to face breast cancer, share your journey, and raise funds to help power the vital research required to reach Zero Deaths from breast cancer is truly extraordinary. We would like to celebrate the incredible strength of those who have been impacted by breast cancer like Sara.

Sara was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and feared a future where she might not see her son’s grow up. Thanks to the ongoing investment into breast cancer research, Sara’s breast cancer treatment was successful. She is now back to enjoying life with her loved ones and we’re incredibly grateful for the strength she provides to others facing breast cancer in her role as a NBCF community ambassador.

Scientific discovery is the key to reaching our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

Figuring out how different treatments and drugs affect cancer cells requires the right environment for cells to grow. That’s why NBCF-funded Professor Jeff Holst is using a special piece of equipment called a Baker Ruskinn SCI-tive Hood in his research at UNSW.

Described as a ‘lab in a box’, the equipment provides a stable environment that mimics conditions in the human body like oxygen levels. This encourages breast cancer cells to grow so researchers can test drugs and personalised treatment options.

Throughout National Science Week we want to showcase some of the incredible technology that our researchers are using, that powers life-changing research.

Associate Professor Peter Simpson is using a laser capture microdissection microscope for his NBCF-funded research at the University of Queensland to help understand the causes of breast cancer in young women.

This unique microscope uses a powerful laser beam to precisely cut and isolate specific cells from breast tumour tissue samples. His research team can then extract and analyse DNA to find genetic differences that cause cancer to develop and grow.

Keep an eye out for more incredible tech highlights later this week.

Thanks to our generous community, we are able to invest in world-class breast cancer research like Professor John Hopper's project.

Professor John Hopper at the University of Melbourne, builds upon breakthroughs made by his team and colleagues who are discovering new ways to predict a woman’s breast cancer risk from her mammograms that are more accurate than all known genetic factors.

"When the National Breast Cancer Foundation first started in 1994, they supported our first research project on twins and looking at mammograms and breast cancer" said Professor Hopper.

We would like to celebrate the strength of friendships this International Friendship Day by showcasing some of our community ambassadors and messages to those they're grateful for.

"The support, care and of course the laughs were some of the best medicine I received following my breast cancer diagnosis. A heartfelt shout out to all of the gals near and far who have been there for me at every step; listening, coming to appointments, making tea, cooking and everything in between! Thank you especially to the 'Loody Legends' who brought a tear to my eye when they set their own challenge of running a half marathon to help raise funds for vital research and zero deaths from breast cancer." Emma, diagnosed 2023

“I want to thank my Brazilian friends who supported me during my breast cancer journey. Whether they did squats with me, wore pink, or contributed to all NBCF fundraising I was involved in, their support meant I never felt lonely. Their unwavering presence meant the world to me. ❤” Flavia, diagnosed 2010

We honor the strength of all those diagnosed with breast cancer as well as their community of supporters, big or small. Here are two message from our community ambassadors to celebrate someone they're grateful for.

“Always there to help me find strength to go through yet another round of treatment, with Mayrose, the sun will always find a way to shine.” Czarina, diagnosed 2022

"Sometimes you meet friends at a point in your life where you need them the most. Chantell and I only became friends a year before my diagnosis and we instantly connected. From the moment I was diagnosed, she stood by me every step of the way, with daily check ins, ensuring I was physically and mentally okay, keeping me physically active during treatment and hosting a community fundraiser, raising much needed funds to help my family. I’m forever grateful for the day she entered my life and want to take the time to honour her” Kathy, diagnosed 2023

As we continue celebrating the strength of friendships, we want to thank our community ambassadors for their support and strength they provide to others by sharing their story.

"I am incredibly fortunate to have amazing friends who have lifted me up during the toughest times. Their unwavering support has created an unbreakable bond between us.

I often tell Kylie she saved my life; if it weren't for her spreading awareness, I might never have had my first breast screen at 40. This was taken at the Mother's Day Classic walk, an event Kylie has rallied our friends to join in the previous 2 years. When I couldn't participate, my friends walked for me. This year, finally joining in was a monumental milestone. This photo brings me immense joy and always makes me smile.

The second photo is of my friends Shenaz and Yaz. Shenaz was the only person who knew about my diagnosis until I broke it to family and friends. Shenaz was the only person I saw during treatment as she's a doctor at the hospital too. Her medical lens and support carried me through so much." Zayaan, diagnosed 2022

In the lead up to International Friendship Day next week, we would like to celebrate the strength of friendships by showcasing some of our community ambassadors and messages to those special people they're grateful for.

"Felicity is an amazing friend. The day after I was diagnosed, she drove 500km to be by my side. She regularly made the 500km trip away from her husband and kids to come help me and my little family during chemo and radiation. She drives me to appointments, cooks and cleans for us. She truly is one of a kind. Here we are celebrating one chemo treatment left." Rebecca, diagnosed 2022.

"This is my friend Amy. Unfortunately, she knows all too well what the cancer journey is like after sadly losing her dad to cancer in 2021. When she found out about my diagnosis, she stepped into action providing our family with support including; frozen meals, grocery shopping, financial assistance and most importantly being my buddy whilst I went through Chemotherapy. I have been through a lot with Amy over the years, as one of my best friends she has been a shining star in a dark night. I want to thank her for everything she has done for us". Meet our incredible fundraisers, Jarrod and Jayden! After Jarrod’s wife Adrianna was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in May 2022, Jarrod and his family hosted a fundraiser to raise funds for us.

Sadly, Adrianna passed away in May 2023. Jarrod decided he wanted Adrianna’s life and journey to make a difference. Holding a number of fundraisers over the past year including their son Jayden shaving his hair this Mother’s Day, they have raised over $42,000 for us. This July Adrianna would have celebrated her 42nd birthday, so Jarrod and the family hope to raise another $1,000 each year in her honour.

“Adrianna’s lived a full life for her 40 years, and what a legacy it would be for her ending to inspire continued resources and research into this space”
