Have you ever seen a physiotherapist for an injury, been diligent with your exercises, return to what you love, only to find that within a few months you are seeing the physiotherapist again for a similar injury?
I have always played and continue to play many sports, so I’m no stranger to injuries and niggles. I could not count the number of injuries I have sustained.
These injuries have meant I see physiotherapists often, whether due to a new or old injury. What I have found through many recovery programs is that I will complete the rehabilitation process, get the
all-clear to return to sport, and consequently neglect my prescribed plan.
When a person completes recovery and then resumes playing sport, they move from a controlled to a relatively uncontrollable environment, which can increase injury risk. Many injuries would benefit from integrating injury management principles into the long–term strength and conditioning training plan.
But what about injury prevention?
When resuming sport, regardless of your injury history, an Injury Prevention Program (IPP) aims to strengthen your body and reduce the risk of injury.

If you’re anything like me, you love to indulge in sweet and festive treats over the Christmas period.
I love making, sharing and eating desserts that I wouldn’t otherwise have during the year. Rum balls (without the rum) and chocolate ripple cake are definitely my favourites! I also love the various savoury treats on offer.
I don’t drink much alcohol, but many people overindulge here too (hopefully responsibly!).
If you haven’t already noticed, the whole Christmas season be an extended period (about one month for many) of increased energy consumption as a result of frequent celebrations and taking time off from usual activities. This can lead to some people being concerned that they might lose fitness and/or gain weight over Christmas.
But won’t your usual running burn off those extra calories? Should you even be thinking about burning off calories?

Steph completed her masters in physiotherapy from the University of Sydney in 2013 and has been off and running ever since.
Steph loves all things performance, having spent years as a dancer in her youth and is currently a competitive aerialist.
Stephanie is an advanced dry needler and has a particular love of all things shoulders and hips.

In 2023, how will you celebrate For Our Elders?
In 2023 the PM team celebrate NAIDOC week by creating space to listen and learn, through reading stories in the collection “Growing Up Aboriginal In Australia”.
Often, in less than 6 pages and under 10mins, the talented writers are able to communicate their lived experience and wisdom, in a personal and unique way. As a white reader I am struck by the generosity of the authors and how vividly our the world is lit up through their artful storytelling.
Now, more than ever we need to seek out Aboriginal perspectives, listen and have discussions about a future that takes better care of elders, both now and for the future.
For each story the team reads from Growing Up Aboriginal In Australia, we will be donating money to who provide a creative drop in studio for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the City of Yarra. We are also running a raffle in our Naarm clinic where all money raised will be going to Blak Pearl Studio.
