Do we need to be afraid of lifting heavy things?

--

A study of 154 patients presenting to a spinal clinic with lumbar disc herniation and lower limb radicular pain were asked what they thought elicited their symptoms*

▪ 62% could not recall a specific event that caused their symptoms!

▪ 26% reported it was during normal tasks or activities such as closing
doors, making the bed or doing housework

▪ 6.5% reported it was due to heavy lifting (loads over 15kg)

▪ 2% reported it was due to light lifting (loads under 15kg)

▪ 2% reported it was non-exertional (sitting, sneezing etc)

▪ 1.3% reported it was due to trauma (trips/falls)

So, what does this tell us?

Despite many of us believing that lifting heavy things causes lumbar disc herniations, often it’s not the case and we shouldn’t be afraid of it!

The health benefits of getting stronger and lifting weights in the gym far outweigh the low risk of injury.

Come and see the team at Aushealth Physiotherapy to get started on your strength training journey today.

*An inciting event was defined as any occurrence, activity, or event that preceded or coincided with the onset of symptoms.

Are you working from home?
How is your ergonomic setup?

If it's not great, it could be the cause of Headaches, neck and back pain.

Here are some simple tips to get you set up right!

In the first photo Nick is demonstrating typical poor postures we see in desk workers.

In the second photo Nick shows us how we should sit!

Here are our tips:

1) Adjust your seat height so that you can keep your upper arms rested along your body, and elbows approximately 90 degree angle. (If you cant adjust your chair, try sitting on a few pillows)

2) Rest your back on the back of the chair. Nick has also added a lumbar roll cushion to his lower back to support the natural curve. Pulling your chair as close to the desk as you can will help with this.

3) Sit back into the chair so you don't lean forwards to stare at the screen, no matter how interesting it is.

4) If possible, get a separate keyboard (or screen) from your laptop. Elevate the laptop so you’re not staring down, straining your neck. You should have your eyes in line with the top half of the screen.

Normatec Compression Pants:

Normatec compression pants are a type of intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device. The device uses cuffs around the legs to provide and release pressure throughout your legs. Its goal is to improve the circulation of blood flow within the veins in the legs. Veins carry de-oxygenated blood from your body back to your heart.

What IPC can be useful for:
· Recent surgery causing swelling and inflammation, and in some cases blood clotting
· Limited mobility due to injury or stroke
· Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
· Inherited blood disorders that may cause blood clotting
· Lower limb oedema due to pregnancy
· Reducing swelling in lymphoedema
· Reducing DOMS post workout

The veins in your legs have tiny valves that help keep blood moving back up toward the heart. A DVT may damage one or more of these valves, causing them to become leaky. When this happens, blood starts to pool in your legs. This can also happen if you are immobile for a long period of time. This can cause blood to flow very slowly through the veins, increasing the risk that cells in the blood will stick together and form a clot.

If you have any of the following conditions, you are not to use IPC devices:
· Non-pitting chronic lymphedema
· Known or suspected deep vein thrombosis
· Pulmonary embolism
· Thrombophlebitis
· Acute inflammation of the skin (erysipelas, cellulitis)
· Uncontrolled/severe cardiac failure
· Pulmonary edema
· Ischemic vascular disease
· Active metastatic diseases affecting the edematous region
· Oedema at the root of the extremity or truncal edema
· Severe peripheral neuropathy

Call us on 02 9905 0048 to make a booking and give these compression pants a go!

Communication is key

One of the most common problems in the fields of health and medicine is that everybody is so busy trying to get through the day, that they don’t take to time to really listen to what a patient is saying. This is where we are different.

The more we know about your injury, how it is affecting you and what you want to achieve from treatment, the better we can tailor a treatment plan to get you there.

We don’t believe in a one size fits all approach to patient care.

We don’t believe in sending patients away with a sheet of paper and saying, “See how you go with these.”
