WHY should we look to innovate in the weight loss space?

Because:
- Weight loss is not as simple as ‘eating less and moving more’.
- It’s time to think of weight management and metabolic health as a patient-centred, whole-person perspective, rather than a simple problem to solve as ‘losing X kilos’
- To create healthier, happier lives with function, good health, independence and a sense of wellbeing.

I am so proud to have collaborated with my peers, Dr. Catherine Bacus, and Glenn Mackintosh for the third, and final instalment of The Australian Weight Loss Summit, looking at innovation in the weight loss space.

This followed Dr. Terri-Lynne South, Dr. Nicole Winter Melbourne Weight Loss Surgery and Alex Papadimitriou Harpers Pharmacy Earlwood for Session 1, looking at Medical and Surgical Approaches to Weight Loss.

And the ever popular Session 2 Panellists, Dr Lucy Burns, Chantelle Wardini Bites Health Clinic and Dr Charlton Lifestyle GP.

The Australian Weight Loss Summit brought together 871 Aussies on Thursday night, with our audience 92% female, 92% 40-60 years of age, and 36% healthcare workers.

Their feedback was:
- “I learned how complex weight loss is, and all the factors that can influence it”
- “There is much more happening in this space that appears quite positive albeit challenging”
- “Loved the medication info and also hearing that obesity is a condition”

And they shared the following:
- “The Australian WL Summit was incredibly informative and provided a wide range of things to consider in terms of improving your overall health and choosing the most suitable options for you. It was encouraging and inspiring, providing lots of food for thought! (No pun intended!). I also felt it was realistic and optimistic - providing hope for many of us who have struggled with weight all out lives”
- “The Australian Weight Loss Summit was extremely well delivered. The diverse speakers gave everyone a great insight into obesity. The various specialists talked about different techniques of training, but at the end, it was obvious of their commitment to help all patients lose weight and keep it off”
- “I loved, and am grateful that the presenters gave up their own time to share their knowledge with the audience. That’s what I call dedication, commitment and generosity. It was a unique experience that would have cost hundreds of dollars. I felt that I was in a safe place”

And … there are many still registering for the Replay, which continues to be available!

Together, we can continue to make an impact, share our knowledge with our peers and the general public, and move towards meaningful weight management conversations.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎄
From our family to yours 😌

With the silly season around the corner you may be thinking how will I stay on track during this time? Here are our top tips to help navigate the Christmas period! 🎄🎁

Tip 1: Use the Portion Plate to assist with putting meals together 🥗🍗🍚 You may not get to choose your options on the day, but you can chose what goes on your plate! Aim for ½ plate non starchy veg/ salad , ¼ plate of protein of choice and ¼ plate of carbohydrates for a balanced meal 🥙

Tip 2: Refer to the Hunger Fullness Scale when eating meals. Tune into to your hunger and fullness levels and aim to stop eating at a 7 / 10 will help manage over- eating at meal times. 🍽️

Tip 3: Moderate your alcohol intake 🥂Making smarter alcohol choices if choosing to drink for example- choosing spirits and a sugar free mixer or soda water over wine, beer and cocktails and remembering to have a glass of water between every drink will help moderate alcohol intake.

Tip 4: Have realistic goals and expectations. For those wanting to lose weight this may be a time to aim for maintenance. For those investigating food intolerances you this may be a time to resume a baseline diet. Talk to your dietitian about what might work best specifically for you. ✅

Tip 5: Be present and enjoy yourself! The next day is a new day and you can get back on track. 💃🏽

Did you know there are food and drinks you could be consuming that reduce your body's ability to absorb iron? 🥦🥩🍞🫘

Tannins in tea, coffee and wine reduce your body's ability to absorb iron as they bind to the iron, carrying it out of the body. Calcium can also affect your body absorbing any plant based sources of iron. ☕️🍵🍷🥛

If you are working on increasing your iron levels, it is important to have any coffee, tea, wine or calcium 1-2 hours before or after any iron rich meal.

For more strategies to help increase your iron book in to have a chat with one of our friendly dietitians! ✨✨

🥗 Boost Your Health: A Smart Diet for Metabolic Syndrome! 🌱

Let's talk about an important topic today: Metabolic Syndrome. It's a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat (especially around the waist), and abnormal cholesterol levels. However, a balanced diet can be your secret weapon in managing and even preventing metabolic syndrome! 🛡️

🥦 Load Up on Veggies: Make your plate colourful with a variety of veggies. They're rich in antioxidants, fiber, and essential nutrients that help combat inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity.

🍗 Choose Lean Proteins: Opt for lean protein sources like chicken, turkey, fish, legumes, and tofu. They're low in saturated fat and provide the amino acids your body needs for repair and growth.

🌾 Go for Whole Grains: Swap refined grains for whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat. They have more fiber, which aids in digestion, controls blood sugar, and keeps you full longer.

🥑 Healthy Fats are Friends: Incorporate sources of healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These fats support heart health and can help manage cholesterol levels.

🥛 Low-Fat Dairy: Choose low-fat or non-fat dairy options to keep saturated fats in check while still getting essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin D.

🚫 Limit Added Sugars: Cut back on sugary drinks, snacks, and desserts. Excess sugar intake can contribute to insulin resistance and weight gain.

🧂 Watch Sodium Intake: Reduce salt in your diet to help control blood pressure. Flavour foods with herbs and spices instead.

🍽️ Portion Control: Keep an eye on portion sizes to avoid overeating. Listen to your body's hunger and fullness cues.

🚴‍♀️ Stay Active: Alongside a balanced diet, regular physical activity is key. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.

Small, consistent changes can lead to big improvements in managing metabolic syndrome and enhancing your overall well-being. You've got this! 💪
