It's not too late to attend the free in-person Meet Your MP workshop to be held in Chatswood on Tuesday 13 September 2022 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The workshop is being run by the Wilderness Society's Sydney North team.
The Wilderness Society believes that it is important for a community to be better equipped to engage in the political process and to have strong relationships with their local decision makers, at all levels of government. The workshop will provide participants with everything they need to successfully engage with their local state or federal member of parliament (MP).
With new federal MPs in the electorates of North Sydney and Mackellar and a recently elected MP in the state electorate of Willoughby, this workshop is perfectly timed for you to contact these new MPs to let them know about your concerns for the environment and other issues.
The workshop will cover the following topics:
· why we meet with members of parliament;
· how to secure a meeting with your MP;
· how to prepare for the meeting;
· what to take with you to the meeting;
· what to say in the meeting; and,
· following the meeting, how to have a productive debrief; and
· how to follow up with your MP on commitments made during the meeting.
You do not need to be a Wilderness Society member or supporter to attend the workshop.
Spaces at the workshop will be limited to comply with all appropriate COVID restrictions and the venue capacity. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP at this website.

Once you RSVP, you will be sent more details about the workshop including venue information.

For too long the NSW Government has ignored the research suggesting that habitat protection is the key to protecting koalas from extinction.
Please consider signing this email campaign from Greens MP Cate Faehrmann AND writing to your local state MP about this important matter.

This is a good opportunity to hear from the candidates in the upcoming federal election on environmental issues.
The Willoughby Environmental Protection Association (WEPA Inc) has once again joined forces with the Nature Conservation Council of NSW to co-host an online candidates’ forum on all things environmental for those voting in the North Sydney Electorate.
While the recent series of candidates’ forums have been excellent in taking us through a range of broad issues, we have been disappointed not to hear more about the action candidates will take on climate, species protection and possible Federal funding for the environmentally damaging Western Harbour and Beaches Link Tunnels proposal.
Come along with your questions and make sure the candidates know how important these issues are to the North Sydney community.
Where: Online via Zoom
When: 7:30pm – 9:00pm Thursday 12 May
MC: Chris Gambian, CEO, NCC
RSVP: https://www.nature.org.au/north_sydney_federal_candidates_forum
Candidates who have agreed to attend (in alphabetical order):
• Heather Armstrong (The Greens)
• William Bourke (Sustainable Australia Party
– Stop Overdevelopment/Corruption)
• Victor Kline (TNL)
• Catherine Renshaw (ALP)
• Kylea Tink (Independent)
We changed the initial date to try to accommodate the sitting member, Trent Zimmerman (Lib), but he has indicated that he was not available for either night. We have not heard back from the other candidates to date.
We need your RSVP!
You must RSVP to attend this event. Please only do so if you are a registered voter in the North Sydney electorate. Check here to see if you are a resident in the electorate.
Once you registered, you’ll receive an email with the Zoom link to attend the forum.

Well, finally.
"The New South Wales government admits the market has turned its back on building new coal mines and has turned its focus to expanding existing operations as it rules out more exploration zones."
Yet, it should have never come to this. The Ganguddy-Kelgoola area on the border of Wollemi National Park, which, in many ways, is the most environmentally sensitive of all three areas, consists mostly of the Coricudgy State Forest. There's been a proposal in place for some time to include the forest in Wollemi National Park and the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. If this happens it will protect this beautiful and culturally significant place for ever.
'A lot less interest' greenfield coal exploration effectively ruled out by NSW government Deputy Premier Paul Toole says several thousand hectares in the Central West and Hunter been deemed unsuitable because of the environmental and economic implications, citing a clear market shift in the interest in building new coal mines.
On the one hand, the NSW Government says it's on the way to net-zero; on the other it's thinking about new coal mines - and it's thinking about putting one on the border of our most precious national park.
How is this ever possible these days.
If you think we need stronger environmental laws to protect our forests, please sign the petition.
Can you spare a minute to help Diana Pryde? Put our forests first. Stronger national environmental laws to protect unique habitats
There's not a lot of talk about the environment, about climate or about energy in the election campaigning so far. Yet, these are the issues that will have the greatest impact on our children and grandchildren.

Wilderness Society members and supporters were contacted earlier in the year to support the collection of video footage from Wollemi National Park.
A year or so ago, the local Rylstone community, along with the Wilderness Society and National Parks Association, were instrumental in having two potential coal mining areas, Hawkins and Rumker, removed from potential release for mining exploration.
One area, Ganguddy-Kelgoola, still remains as proposed for release. This recent video clearly shows the senselessness of releasing this last remaining area for exploration. But, it's in a worse location than the other two - about half of it, comprising the Coricudgy State Forest, is totally surrounded by the Wollemi National Park.
Do you fancy a coal mine in the middle of one of the state's most significant national parks and part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area?
If not, maybe let you local state MP know about it.

“Environmentalists have tried to block the problematic development because the location is the only koala habitat listed in New South Wales as expanding. It also straddles the shortest route between two breeding populations.”
