NEW POWERS TO PROTECT DOCTORS & HEALTH WORKERS
AMA (NSW) President Dr Michael Bonning has commended the NSW Government for amending the Crimes Act to include doctors, nurses and receptionists in private practice in legislation to protect frontline health workers. Under the legislation aggressive patients can be jailed from 12 months up to 14 years.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their workplace and this amendment provides additional safeguards to allow all doctors to attend to patients with greater peace of mind.” Dr Bonning said.
In passing the amendment, Health Minister Ryan Park said “I want to thank the NSW Australian Medical Association for their advocacy for this change, especially Dr Michael Bonning.”

Congratulations to the AMA (NSW) team which completed the 20km Coastrek hike on Friday. We would like to especially congratulate 93-year-old member Dr Conrad Winer OAM, who led the AMA (NSW) team all the way to finish line. Dr Winer is the oldest person to ever complete the Coastrek fundraising hike and his commitment to the task, despite the trek’s worst weather conditions, was a feat to behold.

AMA (NSW) Councillor, Neonatologist Dr Eveline Staub appeared at the final hearing of the Select Committee on Birth Trauma on Monday.
Dr Staub gave evidence regarding the care of the infant based on her role as a practising neonatologist. She reiterated AMA (NSW)’s call for more comprehensive ante-natal education, inclusive of unplanned birthing outcomes and the need for interventions which may result.
