Across Australia, our teams collaborate with their local communities to support initiatives that focus on creating positive outcomes for First Nations peoples, communities, and organisations. In partnership with our First Nations partners, we are proud to participate in initiatives that provide opportunities for First Nations people to actively contribute to the design and delivery of policies, programs, and services that affect their community.

In the Clarence Valley of NSW, local Elders, families, and students from the Bundjalung, Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr nations gathered yesterday to promote the Close the Gap Program to all youth, covering topics such as health, education, employment, justice, and cultural awareness. As a sponsor of this event, our staff embedded themselves among the more than 1600 school students attending, fostering a connection between community and culture through a range of interactive activities on the day.

Alongside Aboriginal owned and run business Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation, who organised and ran the event, Serco was proud to be one of many organisations participating including Clarence Valley Council, Loving Life FM, Bulgarr Ngaru Medical Aboriginal Corporation and visiting National Rugby League players.

We are proud to be actively involved in supporting First Nations organisations and peoples and finding ways to support community events and volunteer our time to get involved.

How can you make a positive impact in your community? Volunteer! For more than 20 years, Maryanne from our Immigration team has spent her free time giving back to her community, enabling communities to grow and enhance their community spirit.

Having volunteered at soup kitchens, music festivals, bushfire recovery efforts, and more, Maryanne’s volunteering highlight was at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne where she was assigned to the Sri Lankan team in the Games Village.

“I would encourage you all to find a project that will make a positive impact on sport, society, or the environment and get involved. Fostering community spirit, developing new skills, and making new friends is a very satisfying way to spend some of your free time.”

We are proud to support our team in dedicating time to support their communities, through our volunteer leave policy.

22/05/2024

In celebration of , we're shining a spotlight on the exceptional members of our team who dedicate their free time to volunteering within their communities. To kick things off, we are recognising Bharti, a dentist from our Australian Defence Services Health Services division. Outside of her professional commitments, Bharti volunteers at her local temple, where she helps organise various community events and ceremonies. Driven by the sense of community and spirituality that the temple brings, Bharti finds joy and fulfillment in supporting her fellow worshippers.

For anyone thinking of volunteering, Bharti encourages you to find something you're passionate about. "Volunteering not only benefits others but brings a sense of purpose and satisfaction to oneself. It's a wonderful way to give back and make a positive impact," she says.

Continuing our celebration of International Nurses Day, we shine a spotlight on Nicole Stanley, a dedicated nurse based in Victoria. With over 20 years in the field, Nicole's incredible work, especially in mental health nursing, serves as an inspiration to all.

Having worked in the Defence sector for over four years, Nicole has a deep understanding of the unique mental health challenges faced by military personnel. She believes in providing compassionate care, understanding, and a non-judgmental space for her patients.

Nicole's approach? A holistic, patient-centric one. She shares, "I love working with people who have been on deployment. They can’t talk to people; they won’t take it home. It gives them space to talk without judgment."

Her impact goes beyond her day job. Many of her patients maintain contact, a testament to the trust she builds and the lasting impact of her care. Nicole's journey is about the lives touched, the silent battles fought alongside her patients, and the unspoken words of gratitude.

We celebrate nurses like Nicole who remind us of the profound impact one person can make.

Across Serco, many of our colleagues go beyond delivering essential public services by volunteering their own time to provide vital support for their local communities. And Khalid Ayoubi, Acting Transport and Es**rt Operations Manager, from our Immigration team in Melbourne, is one of them.

Khalid is a dedicated member of the Plenty Brigade of the Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) and has been volunteering at local community events to raise awareness of fire safety.

Recently, he donned his firefighter's turnout gear to join his brigade teammates in the Diamond Creek Festival CFA Tug-Of-War Contest, where they faced off against the neighbouring District 14 station. This annual event not only fosters community support but also highlights the crucial efforts of the CFA in outer metropolitan and regional areas, emphasising fire safety in high bushfire risk zones.

We are proud of the work of Khalid and our colleagues through volunteering demonstrates their commitment to our values and truly does create a positive impact.

We are to be part of an amazing initiative that supports children affected by parental incarceration and see the positive impact this book is having across Australia!

📚 The Central Queensland Health Service team (pictured) are sharing our storybook, The Sun Still Shines, with dads in custody at an upcoming event! We are THRILLED to see our little book being used far and wide to help kids and their parents in custody.

The Sun Still Shines is now available at public libraries across NSW, VIC, TAS, QLD, WA, and soon SA.

That's quite a footprint! We hope to reduce the stigma for children with a parent in custody. When they see this on the library shelves, they'll know that they are not alone. ☀️

Thank you to collaborators Green Fox Studio, social worker Mary Jo McVeigh, and Serco Asia Pacific.

Urgent Mission Success! Amid preparations for RSV Nuyina’s full Antarctic season last year, our team faced an unexpected challenge: a medical evacuation over 2000 miles away! With the station's runway closed, our team swiftly pivoted to send the ship and conduct a rescue that had never before been undertaken so close to the Antarctic winter.

In a race against time to rescue an expeditioner from Casey Station, the team swiftly pivoted from their existing schedule to the new mission. Overhauling logistical, crewing, and regulatory arrangements, utilising advanced technology for planning, conducting extensive training drills, while monitoring the ship's progress through Antarctic winter conditions around the clock.

Delivered at minimal notice in challenging conditions, the mission was a success!

We are immensely proud of our ASRV team for all that they do to deliver that service, whether they are providing unprecedented and extended access to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica or saving a life at the edge of the world. In recognition of their swift actions, they were recently awarded a global Pulse Award.

Large Australian defence contractors play a key role in enabling and amplifying innovative solutions developed by local industry partners, strengthening Australia’s industry capability. That’s why we are proud to partner with Navity, an innovative educational software solution for maritime students.

Navity, founded by Joe Currin, a former Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy and Serco employee from our HMAS Watson Training Services team, leverages his insights and experience to create a solution addressing key challenges in traditional maritime training.

Bolstering our service delivery, Navity commenced its support for the Royal Australian Navy in September 2023 through a subcontracting agreement with Serco, enhancing their Maritime Warfare Officers' training.

Managing a large number of subcontractors can be a challenging task, especially when dealing with paper-based and labour-intensive processes. Our Fiona Stanley Hospital team embraced this challenge and modernised their management approach.

By implementing the cloud-based Rapid Global solution, the team streamlined the permitting process, providing on-site subcontractors with real-time access to permits and enhanced security features such as geofencing. This ensures that permits are only signed when subcontractors are on-site, promoting safety.

This digital shift not only improves our subcontractor management efficiency but also has a positive impact on the environment, significantly reducing paper usage and storage requirements across the hospital.
