After 29 years as honorary archivist for the Estonian Archives in Australia, Maie Barrow has decided to retire. Maie remains on the Council of EAA and will continue to work in the Archive as a volunteer.

The new honorary archivist is Dr Terry Kass. Terry is a professional historian and author of 11 books, all based on research in original sources. Two books have won awards from the Australian Society of Archivists , whilst others have been similarly recognised. He has conducted research in state and national archives and libraries over a career of over 40 years. He has sat on advisory panels for archives in Australia. Taking up this new role gives him an opportunity to apply that experience to Estonian archives.

The Estonian Archives in Australia wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Estonian Archives in Australia is honoured to have been recognised in this year’s Citizen Day awards. The archive has existed for 71 years and in that time many volunteers have devoted their time and experiences both in the Archive and on the Archives Council. It is gratifying to have their contribution recognised.

Kristi Karelson, Director General, Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Välisministeerium visited the Archive on 2nd of December and handed the letter, which we are now proudly displaying in the Archive, to Maie Barrow the archivist.

Thank you to all who supported our fundraising drive to digitise the oral history collection last year. That project is now complete and we are now investigating ways to make this more widely accessible.

This year we are asking you to support our current project which is to collect, assess, describe and digitise the Estonian Festival / Eesti Päevad material. It is nearly 70 years since the first Eesti Päevad in Sydney. We have films, videos, photographs and sound recordings which together will comprise a treasure trove of our cultural heritage in Australia.
