Exciting News. 🤩

We’re thrilled to announce that the architecture firm Giusto Van Campenhout and artist Michel François have been selected to redesign the Horta Hall at the Centre for Fine Arts. 🙌

Starting in spring 2025, this iconic hall, designed by Victor Horta nearly 100 years ago, will be transformed into a vibrant meeting space at the crossroads of various artistic disciplines. The project, merging artistic intervention with architectural design, will feature a light tent, a carpet inspired by the original marble, and circular furniture with a refined colour palette.

Under the artistic direction of Christophe Slagmuylder, this renovation will enhance the visitor experience while honouring Horta’s architectural genius. 👏

Keep an eye out for updates on this captivating renovation.

We’re thrilled to introduce you to our first edition of 'Staging the Concert', a groundbreaking project where visual art and music come together in a unique dialogue. 💥

At Bozar, we’re exploring new dimensions of the concert experience through the interplay of space, light, and materials.

In this project, Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem delve into Béla Bartók’s ‘Music for strings, percussion, and celesta’ (1937). The piece features a mirror-like arrangement of string groups, separated by percussion. Robbrecht en Daem architecten take this special configuration and translate it into five floating architectural objects within the Henry Le Bœuf hall, enhanced by a thoughtful lighting design.

If the music sounds familiar, you might just recognise it from a famous film. 😲

‘I want to make the things we own more beautiful.’ ✨ — Sophie Taeuber-Arp

We are thrilled to present a major exhibition dedicated to the artistic genius of one of the most influential couples in 20th-century art: Hans/Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp.

From their first meeting in 1915 until Taeuber-Arp's untimely passing in 1943, their collaboration redefined boundaries between fine and applied arts.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore Sophie Taeuber-Arp's vibrant and geometric abstract works alongside Hans/Jean Arp's biomorphic forms, collages, and sculptures.

Born in Switzerland, Taeuber-Arp embarked on a creative journey across Europe, immersing herself in textile design, painting, sculpture, and more. Her work, characterised by a playful precision, reflects her belief in enhancing the beauty of everyday objects.

Join us at Bozar to experience the extraordinary diversity and brilliance of these two iconic artists and celebrate their lasting impact on abstract art.

Chantal Akerman once told an interviewer that each of her films needs hallways, doors, and rooms. ‘Those doors and hallways help me frame things, and they also help me work with time’. 👀

Akerman’s pioneering approach to filmmaking blurs the lines between documentary and fiction. The exhibition showcases her works from her early 8mm films to her later museum installations, emphasizing her unique use of space and time. Key works such as ‘Les Rendez-vous d’Anna’ (1978), Dis-moi’ (1980 TV documentary) and ‘NOW’ (2015) are discussed, illustrating Akerman's consistent vision and innovative techniques. 🙌

The retrospective offers a comprehensive look at how her art evolved while remaining deeply rooted in themes of displacement, memory, and the passage of time.

“Music is architecture in time” | Bozar Brussels 08/07/2024

“We were asked to converse with a piece of music from the perspective of our discipline. Because music is a language, as is architecture, of course. And so, we set geometry, the basis of architecture, against the structure of Béla Bartók’s Music for strings, percussion and celesta.” Paul from Robbrecht en Daem architecten

The dialogue between music and visual art intensifies at Bozar this season with Staging the Concert, where an artist is invited to “intervene in the music.” Robbrecht en Daem architecten are up first. For them, music is architecture in time. Read the article.

‘When people are enjoying a film they say “I didn’t see the time go by”… but I think that when time flies and you don’t see time passing by you are robbed of an hour and a half or two hours of your life. Because all you have in life is time. With my films you’re aware of every second passing through your body.’ ― Chantal Akerman

‘La ‘Gamme d’Amour’ tells the story of the impossible love between Miamia and Fifrelin during the Carnival, in a puppet and mask shop. ‘It is a ballet for puppets, who are portrayed by real dancers,’ explained Xavier Tricot, one of the world's most renowned Ensor experts. ‘I consider Ensor a bit like a director. Scenes from his ballet can be found in his paintings. He was fascinated by Wagner, but also by popular theater, both in French and Dutch.’

Ensor was very proud of the music he composed, Xavier Tricot emphasized. ‘He often mentioned it in his memoirs. Visitors who came to his living room in Ostend admired his painting 'The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889,' placed above the harmonium. The master would then declare irritably, 'But listen to my wonderful compositions.’’

Don't miss out on the final days to experience the splendour of Ensor's at Bozar, open until 23 June.
