Exercise professionals are often asked "how much exercise do I need?" The recommended minimum guidelines are one place to start. Thinking about the health goals, and what moderate, and vigorous means to our individual participants and clients is another piece of the puzzle. Does more than the minimum offer more benefit? Recent research shows that working out two to four times beyond the minimum vigorous physical activity recommendations can lead to an even lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, for example. Combining moderate and vigorous activity (not all of one or the other), is another option for increasing the benefit of regular exercise. Not a simple answer to a seemingly simple question. There is more useful information in this article from the American Medical Association.

Some new research suggests that exercise is effective against depression because of its effect on motivation. A key marker of depression, anhedonia, (a lack of joy in life experience) is related to elevated inflammation, which in turn is linked to disrupted dopamine production. Exercise reduces inflammation, boosts dopamine function, and therefore, boosts motivation. Researchers from the University College of London, propose that "exercise -- particularly aerobic activities that make you sweaty and out of breath -- decreases inflammation and boosts dopamine transmission, which in turn increases the desire to exert effort, and therefore boosts motivation generally."
