Several of our scouts in the city have spoken and said the playground is soggy and wet. With ongoing showers 🌧️ and risk of thundershowers this morning, we are going to postpone today's playdate until a better weather day!

Stay cozy and dry today, friends! And we'll look forward to seeing you next time instead.

Thanks for your understanding 🫣

Dedicated to moving mental health forward in Canada, promotes awareness and action with a strategy built on 4 key pillars: Fighting the stigma, improving access to care, supporting world-class research, and leading by example in workplace mental health.

How can you support someone you know who is suffering?

🟒 Be kind
🟒 Educate yourself on the signs and symptoms
🟒 Pay attention to the language you use
🟒 Listen carefully and with intent
🟒 Begin a helpful conversation to address concerns

Mental health affects everyone, including kids and teens β€” there is no such thing as health without mental health!

Physios Sam and Lindsey took a trip to Sydney this weekend to present at the annual TAPHE conference.

They met with Physical Education teachers from all over the province to advocate for and educate about the role of physiotherapy in school-aged children. There are so many of us working hard toward the collective goal of healthy and active kids in NS schools!

Lindsey was an excellent tour guide.. the major highlight was obviously the world's largest fiddle!

We were happy to catch the tail end of Cape Breton's famous fall colours.

Squatting to Play is an important milestone that can be observed once your little one has gained a bit more balance βš–οΈ and strength πŸ’ͺ🏼 in a standing position!
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
This important skill is a great way to work on:
▫️Maintaining hip, knee and ankle range of motion
▫️Strengthening the muscles of the legs and hips, especially quads as they move in and out of their squat!
▫️Strengthening core/trunk muscles
▫️Working on balance and trunk stability
▫️Fine-tuning motor control, etc.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
At first, your child may require a surface for support while squatting to play (e.g. holding onto a couch with one hand). As they learn to master this skill, you will start noticing them squatting to play in the middle of the room.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ’‘ Placing smaller toys on the ground is a great way to encourage your little one to bend their knees and play into a deep squat position! Some of our favourite toys to place on the ground include:
πŸ“š Books
⚽️ Small balls and bean bag animals
πŸ”Ή Blocks and shape puzzles, etc.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Try squatting to play with your little one! It has great benefits for adults too! Can you still maintain a deep squat?

Thanks for this info!

Nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting is a commonly seen paediatric pelvic health concern!
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
There are 2️⃣ type of enuresis:
🚽Primary nocturnal enuresis: children over the age of 5-6 who never had a dry night.
🚽 Secondary nocturnal enuresis is when a child is able to have dry nights for at least 6 months, but starts bedwetting again.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
What might cause bedwetting?
🧻 Family history (genetics)
🧻 Slow development of brain-bladder control
🧻 Smaller than expected bladder capacity
🧻 Excess urine production while asleep
🧻 Sleep disorders
🧻 Constipation
🧻 Stress/big life changes!
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Here are a couple strategies to try to help your child with bed wetting concerns:
πŸ’§ Reduce the amount of fluids your child drinks 1-2 hours before bed
πŸ’§Create a schedule for bathroom use (changing toilet habits) throughout the day
πŸ’§ Use a bed wetting alarm
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Talk to a paediatric pelvic health physiotherapist for more information about how to help your child eliminate bedwetting!

Thanks !!

Let’s talk about… Concussion Baseline Testing! 🧠

As the fall and winter sports are upon us, Kids Physio Group would like to encourage all athletes at risk of concussion to book in for a concussion baseline test!

When a child has a concussion, we work hard with them and their family to get them back to normal. But what is normal and why is it important? πŸ€”

One of the toughest factors of treating concussions is that often children will feel "fine" (be symptom free) before their brains and bodies have actually recovered. The risk of going back to sport at this stage is that another concussion could occur before full recovery has happened which could result in a more serious injury.

A Baseline Test looks at how your child moves and thinks in a very standardized way, it establishes their "normal". When making the decision on whether or not it's safe for your child to resume sports we can compare their recovery to their healthy baseline to clearly see if they've recovered or not. Plain and simple it eliminates any guesswork on whether your child is going to be safe. πŸ‘

Please reach out to us if you are interested in booking your child in for a baseline test or would like more information! ℹ️ We also do these for full teams, so we can do group sessions if interested!

Thank you !!

Today we're chatting about BABYWEARING:
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Babywearing has tons of benefits including but not limited to:
πŸ‘ΆπŸ» Time spent off the back of the head!
πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ Helps promote healthy hip development when positioned appropriately. Looking for hips to be in an β€˜M’ position, with their thighs spread wide and wrapped around the parent/guardian, knees slightly higher than bum, and thighs well supported.
πŸ‘ΆπŸ½ Sensory development and regulation - vestibular input, proprioceptive input, and more!
πŸ‘ΆπŸΎ Bonding with parent/guardian
πŸ‘ΆπŸΏ Allows parent/guardian to be hands-free while carrying babe for a little bit! Hello hot coffee (best in a sealed mug for no spills on baby), shopping, playing with other children, reading a book, you name it!
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
A great acronym to remember when babywearing is TICKS:
T - tight
I - in view at all times πŸ‘€
C - close enough to kiss πŸ’‹
K - keep chin off chest (baby’s chin off their own chest)
S - supported back (wearer and baby)
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
A couple of other things to keep in mind:
▫️ Newborns need their heads to be well supported.
▫️ Encourage a flexed position for newborns - think elbows, hips, and knees.
▫️ Don’t forget about the β€˜M’ position for their hips.
▫️ Choose a carrier that is comfortable for you to wear too! ▫️ Baby should be kept close to you with weight evenly distributed.

Thank you!

Today, Canadians across the country are participating in the Terry Fox run to raise awareness about cancer and cancer research as well as to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
18-year-old Terry Fox, from Port Coquitlam BC, was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma just above the knee, and subsequently had his leg amputated. Terry’s fierce determination to bring an end to the suffering cancer causes set him on a path that, quite simply, changed the world.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
On April 12th, 1980 he dipped his prosthetic leg here in the Atlantic Ocean and began his race across Canada, running close to a marathon a day for 143 days.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
On Sept. 1, 1980, cancer returned in his lungs and he was forced to stop his run in Thunder Bay Ontario after having run 5,373 kilometres. He returned to BC for treatment before passing away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Although this bold and courageous Canadian was gone, his legacy was just beginning. To date, over $850 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

In case you missed it... Friday was National Concussion Awareness Day! We put a lot of work into understanding this important topic. πŸ’‘

What is it a concussion? It's a rapid brain acceleration inside the skull that causes various physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related symptoms. This can be due to a hit to the head, face, neck, or body.

🚨 Physical Symptoms: Headache, dizziness, balance issues, and more.
🧠 Cognitive Changes: Memory trouble, confusion, slowed thinking.
😒 Emotional Shifts: Anxiety, sadness, irritability.
😴 Sleep Disturbances: Fatigue, insomnia, changes in sleep patterns.

If you or your child experience these signs, consult a trained health professional. Remember, knowledge empowers us! Let's stay safe, be aware, and support each other in our journeys to recovery and wellness. πŸ’ͺ❀️

Now that summer camps have come to an end and young athletes are returning to school, they will have less time to commit to multiple sports. Due to less availability for activities, should they be specializing in one sport with year-round training or should they share their availability with multiple sports/activities?

For ALL youth sports, there is a common misconception that young athletes NEED to participate year-round in their sport in order to be successful, and we wanted to set the record straight because the research disagrees!

Swipe through to learn about the risks of year-round play in the same sport, and the importance of time off in order to play, develop other motor skills, and participate in different types of training that will give significant benefits for sport performance in the long term!
