Did you know that physiotherapists in Nova Scotia are now allowed to order routine X-rays? This is a positive new initiative that could save a trip to ER or to your family doctor!

We are happy to say that all of our physiotherapists are allowed to order routine X-rays. If you have fallen and suspect an injury, look into seeing one of our therapists and if they determine that X-ray is required, they will be able to give you a requisition right away.

In addition, our Chiropractor can also order X-Rays so we have you covered!

Following an ankle sprain, it is essential to incorporate balance and agility exercises into your rehab plan to get you back playing on the field as soon as you can:

Here are the advantages:

πŸ™Œ Improved Balance: Ankle sprains often lead to reduced proprioception (awareness of body position) and balance. These exercises challenge your balance and proprioception, helping to restore these abilities.

πŸ™Œ Strengthening Muscles: The instability of a wobble board engages the muscles around the ankle, including the calf muscles, shin muscles, and stabilizing muscles. This helps to strengthen these muscles, which is crucial for preventing future sprains.

πŸ™Œ Enhanced Joint Stability: Working on balance and agility can improve the stability of the ankle joint by activating the muscles responsible for stabilizing the joint. This can reduce the risk of re-injury and improve overall joint function.

πŸ™Œ Range of Motion: Using a wobble board in controlled movements can help improve the ankle joint range of motion, which is often limited after an ankle sprain due to swelling and immobility.

πŸ™Œ Neuromuscular Control: Balance and agility exercises require coordination and control, which can help retrain the neuromuscular system to respond effectively to balance challenges and sudden movements.

πŸ™Œ Functional Rehabilitation: balance and agility exercises mimic real-life movements and challenges, making them highly functional for activities that require balance and stability, such as walking, running, and sports.

πŸ™Œ Psychological Benefits: Engaging in active rehabilitation exercises like wobble board training and agility exercises can boost confidence and motivation, as patients can see tangible improvements in their balance and strength over time.

It's important to note that wobble board, agility, and balance exercises should be introduced gradually and under the guidance of a healthcare professional or physical therapist. They can tailor the exercises to your specific injury and recovery stage to ensure optimal benefits and prevent further injury.

Get in touch with our team if you need help after a recent injury.

Our team in Dartmouth has had the pleasure of working with Owen, a fourth-year Kinesiology student at Dalhousie University, for his practicum.

Owen has been a pleasure to work with thus far. He is picking up on all the small things details that help make the clinic run proficiently, and lending a hand without question. He also seems to have an open mind, as he welcomed learning about the different modalities in the clinic, and took curiosity in case management.

πŸŽ‰ This 25-hour practicum couldn't come at a better time, as he just applied to the Master's Physiotherapy program at Dalhousie University!

Best of luck to Owen!

⚑ We offer Shockwave Therapy at both our Halifax and Dartmouth locations. Contact our offices today to schedule your appointment! Learn more about what Shockwave Therapy is below πŸ‘‡

Shockwave Therapy or Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-energy shockwaves to stimulate healing and reduce pain. In physiotherapy clinics, ESWT has been used for various musculoskeletal conditions with reported benefits and uses.

How does it work❓

Strong energy pulses are applied to the injury site and promote healing by enhancing cell metabolism and circulation. It is commonly used to treat a variety of tendinopathies and does not have any notable side effects. Most patients only require three-to-six sessions. Therapeutic shockwaves were originally introduced as a medical treatment for eliminating kidney stones. Today, shockwave technology is used globally by millions of people to treat a wide range of conditions.

The benefits of shockwave therapy include:
βœ” Non-surgical treatment option
βœ” Affordable
βœ” Non-invasive
βœ” Faster healing process
βœ” Minimal side-effects

Common conditions treated with shockwave therapy include:

βœ” Plantar fasciitis (heel pain or spur pain)
βœ” Tennis elbow
βœ” Jumper’s knee
βœ” Achilles tendonitis
βœ” Shin splints
βœ” Frozen shoulder
βœ” Calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff
βœ” Trochanteric bursitis
βœ” Chronic tendinopathy

❄️ Winter Shoveling Tips ❄️

1️⃣ Warm Up: Stretch those muscles! πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ Light stretching before shoveling helps prevent strains and injuries.

2️⃣ Use the Right Technique: Bend those knees, and lift with your legs! πŸ’ͺ Keep your back straight and avoid twisting to protect your spine.

3️⃣ Choose the Right Shovel: Opt for a curved handle shovel to ease bending and stress on your back. πŸ”„ Ensure the blade is sturdy for the snow type.

4️⃣ Take Breaks: Listen to your body! ⏸️ Take regular breaks, hydrate, and rest if feeling fatigued or uncomfortable.

5️⃣ Shovel Early: Beat the snow! πŸ•’ Shovel earlier to tackle lighter, fresher snow and reduce strain later.

Stay safe and if you are hurt after all that shoveling, you know where to find us! ❄️
