✨Meet Abi✨

Abi is originally from Watson, Saskatchewan and has been working at the clinic for the last few months. She is an upbeat personality that gives patients the warmest welcomes as they enter the clinic. Abi is in her second year of her Kinesiology degree at UBCO and has already completed an Adventure Tourism Diploma. She is the perfect fit for the outdoor enthusiast demographic we have here at the clinic.🏞

Her draw to adventure tourism comes from her love of a variety of outdoor activities. Abi loves: mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, and paddle boarding. On top of the Okanagan providing access to all these activities, she also enjoys the warm weather and the sunshine Kelowna offers. If she isn’t out being rad in nature, she finds joy in reading books and crocheting!🧶

She enjoys working in the clinic for a variety of reasons, saying: “My co-workers are awesome, they all make the day so great. It is also amazing to able to learn things about recovery and the human body in the workplace.”

We are lucky to have such a hardworking and kind person like Abi on the team.💙

🥇CONGRATS SAM🥇

Our very own Sam Green took home gold in the 1/2 Ironman Relay this weekend. Her run time was 1:37 which is close to her personal best! So proud of her in first competition back since having her son. This momma is on a roll! 👊

🔷Patient highlight🔷

Our highlight this month is someone that radiates positivity and brings so much good energy to the clinic and beyond. Kyla is a teacher that helps support children with learning disabilities for 2 different schools in Kelowna. Kyla has had debilitating knee and foot pain for quite some time. This lead to a knee replacement surgery.🦵

We will let her tell the rest of the story: “In 2020, I was lucky enough to be referred to Three Sixty Physio by Dr. Chamberlain with chronic foot and knee pain. I played competitive sports most of my life (basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, etc.), so with this active lifestyle came a number of aches and pains. Now, as a wife, a mother of two boys and a school teacher for over 25 years, it was time to deal with these concerns.  In June 2021, Dr. Petretta performed a right knee patellofemoral joint replacement. The pain before the knee replacement stopped me from being taking part in most activities. Even stepping on and off a curb was excruciating!”🤕

“Then comes the amazing team at Three Sixty! Without Roy Gillespie and Neil Brock, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be as strong as I am today. Their collaboration, professionalism, compassion, extensive knowledge on best practice and their sense of humour brought me to the point where I am now skiing, biking and hiking with my family.  But I'm not done yet! Neil Brock continues to modify my rehabilitation program to improve my overall physical health.  My family and I can't thank Three Sixty enough for what they've done.”❤️

Kyla is a hard worker who is as tough as they come. Her perseverance has lead to a complete recovery for her knee and we continue to tackle other aches and pains that present to bring her closer and closer to a pain free life. Her goals include keeping up with her kids, which motivates the team even more to optimize her body and keep this superhero in fighting shape!👊

🔷Patient Highlight🔷

Nikki is one of the most high-spirited, kindest patients that we see on a weekly basis. As an outdoor enthusiast and nurse Nikki is always on her feet, which makes her injury even more devastating. Nikki endured a left ankle compound open fracture dislocation in July of last year after falling while mountain biking in Squamish. Since then, Nikki has been fighting an infection to her bone resulting in an additional 4 surgeries.🏩

We asked her about her injury and experience at the clinic, she told us: “My injury was anything but usual- and I ended up needing multiple surgeries, muscle and skin grafting, and many weeks of antibiotics (I now affectionately call my ankle Fr-ankle-stein for its collection of scars). I have been working with Sam and Riley for physiotherapy, Neil for a workout plan, and Emma for ankle bracing. With the knowledge and support of these professionals I have been able to get back out on my mountain bike- a huge accomplishment and my goal from the beginning of my rehab journey!”🚵

Sam has been working with Nikki, starting with partial weight bearing in a boot to walking unassisted. Using a variety of techniques to regain range of motion and build muscle including: blood flow restriction, active assisted range of motion using therapist over pressure, contract relax techniques, mobilization’s with movement & the Mulligan technique.🤝

Nikki is very dedicated to her rehabilitation and weight lifts daily. The team has been working tirelessly with Nikki to ensure she regains full functionality. Her commitment and efforts are inspirational to all of us at ThreeSixty, and it has been paramount in her complex, continued recovery.💯

🤝Active Assisted Range of Motion🤝

Here is Sam using a strap with a patient to perform assisted active range of motion. The patient had a lack of range of motion after surgery to repair her ankle. With dorsiflexion (pulling foot up) limited, Sam’s body weight helps decrease space between lower leg and foot.🦵

This technique is helpful in many different ailments. It is also helpful in maintaining healthy range of motion during natural mobility loss with aging. Although effective it is recommended that it is performed/prescribed by a professional.👩‍⚕️

Tune in this week to see in our stories, some ways we use this technique! Ask away in comments✋

💃🏼Patient Highlight💃🏼

Wendy and Ben love working together in the week, laughs and jabs can be heard throughout the clinic. Showing that rehab doesn’t always have to be so serious!🤪

Wendy is recovering from an Achilles Rupture. The difficult milestones to achieve after this injury include 1 leg calf raises, jumping with an equal force distribution between legs, and endurance. She is at the end stages before returning to pickleball so we have focused on gradually increasing the amount of volume, load, and intensity her achilles can handle.🦵

We have assessed this by using our Hawkins Dynamics force plates to test Wendy's force production when she is fresh and when fatigued. Over time her testing has become strong bilaterally and she has increased her amplitude. She is almost there! 💪

We will miss her energy and the playfulness she brings to the clinic. However, we are happy that she is getting back to doing what she loves!🏓

🔫Gunn IMS Certified🔫

Jenn is now certified in Gunn IMS! Gunn IMS is intramuscular stimulation which is another form of "Dry needling" with a neuropathic focus. The treatment, which utilizes acupuncture needles to pe*****te deep within muscle tissue, specifically targets injured muscles that have contracted and become shortened from distress. supersensitive muscle will ‘grasp’ the needle in what can be described as a cramping sensation. The result is threefold.

One, a stretch receptor in the muscle is stimulated, producing a reflex relaxation (lengthening). She can now needle from head to toe.
Two, the needle also causes a small injury that draws blood to the area, initiating the natural healing process. Three, the treatment creates an electrical potential in the muscle to make the nerve function normally again.

She can now needle from head to toe and adds another skill to her already abundant toolbox. If you have any questions leave them in the comments!

🤷‍♀️Whats the deal with bands?🤷‍♂️

Adding bands to different exercises can recruit a variety of new muscle groups to old school exercises. Bands can help “turn on” muscles that are generally activated during rotational movements. An element of difficulty that is also immensely functionally beneficial. Below is a list of exercises that may help your body believe you can teach an old dog new tricks. 🐶

1️⃣ TRX rows with band placed around wrists. Hold TRX handle with thumbs up, create tension between shoulder blades by putting some tension on the band and then pull up by drawing elbows straight back. You will feel work in: Biceps, Upper back, and the back of the shoulder. Ease back to starting position and repeat. 💪

2️⃣ Band Shuffles/Banded Skaters, place band around ankles for this one. You will then start with feet shoulder width apart and then either slowly shuffle or tap toes at a 45 degree angle behind you. You will feel work in your quads but primarily the burn will be felt in your glutes. This is a great movement for warming up legs pre-workout or pre-competition. 🍑

3️⃣ Last is the squat with band around knees. Similar to #2 but this time feet will be stationary, so it is imperative that the band moves to somewhere that has some movement. This again helps glutes to fire but also ensures the patient presses knees out during the squat. Eliminating knee collapse can help mitigate pain during squats and influence a more positive alignment over time.💯

If you have any questions leave a comment in the section below! We have infinity bands for sale to up your game, so don’t hesitate to add a little stretch to your strength. May just help your function and form!🏋️

💪Exercise if the week!💪

Overhead marching paloff press! This movement is a great movement to prime your body for weight lifting and athletic movements. Core will be activated and stability is challenged while point of contact transfers from foot to foot.💯

To perform you need a resistance band attached overhead and you will step out until you feel resistance with hands overhead. Next with a “crunch” held you will lift knee to hip height one at a time, either for time or reps.🕚

This exercise is good for sports with running, sports that demand stability, and sports that require on the fly posture adjustments. So pretty much any athlete will benefit from this move.
⚽️🏀🏈⚾️🥎🎾🏐🏉🥏🏑🏒🏸🏓

If you have questions about form, drop them in the comments below. If you want a workout plan catered to you, contact us at the clinic to get your personalized program and let us help you optimize your body!💃🏼🕺

Hi. 🐾 My name is Leonard Gordon and I just wanted you to know that my Mom and Dad, and , gave me a baby brother on February 24th.

His name is Emmett Eric Andrew and he was 7 lbs.

I think he has a little longer before his first visit to the vet, but I’ll be there every step of the way ‘cuz I love him more than carrying big sticks on hikes and treats.

I think my Mom is awake now so I’m gonna go take a nap and let her feed him so he stops barking.

I can’t wait for you all to meet him ‘cuz I know you’ll love him just as much as I do.
