Our First Month in Lethbridge where a baby was born enroute to the hospital 😳 We had to find a new location icon for our birth board 🥰 Strong Mama and baby!!

November was a joyful month. 12 cuties born (9 boys and 3 girls) were caught to start off the winter ❄️🥰

Unplanned Home Breech Delivery 😳😳😳

Babies come with lots of surprises.

We are excited to share this testimonial of one of our strong and amazing mamas!!

Having given birth via midwife at home in Calgary in 2020, I knew that I wanted the intimate and patient-centered experience again in Lethbridge. Particularly because my labor was fast and furious, and it was likely it would be again.

Throughout my pregnancy I was well taken care of by Angela, Joy, Fortuna, and Rita, feeling that with each meeting, I was in great hands. When we discovered my baby was breech, I had many questions about getting him to flip, delivery options, etc. All of them were answered thoroughly, and luckily he ended right side up and stayed this way through my last checkup.

My contractions started at 12:30 pm, I began timing them at 12:47 and I called Angela around 1:12 pm. By the time she arrived (which was swiftly) I was 10 cm dilated already, but baby boy had decided to return to the breech position. Angela looped Fortuna into our experience via speakerphone, while she explained my options, answered my questions regarding safety, and left me with the decision of deciding between heading to the hospital or staying home. While I considered my decision, I went to the bathroom while being discouraged from pushing. Baby made the decision for me by breaking my water with one of his feet!

I then got into pushing position on my bed, on my hands and knees, which Angela had encouraged me to choose because it felt the most natural to me. Lying on my back didn’t feel right. From there, I was told to push whenever I had a contraction, and he came out with both feet first!

I later found out that a Footling breech vaginal delivery is rare and medically challenging, but throughout, Angela remained calm, encouraging, and focused. While the sensations were unfamiliar and I did have some anxiety about the unknown, I felt comfortable and empowered in the moment because I was listening to my body and in knowledgeable hands.

My baby was born at 1:56 pm surrounded by daddy, grandma, and there midwives, Angela and Fortuna. While he took a little encouragement to breathe on his own, needing suctioning and bagging, eventually he began to breathe spontaneously, and I got to cuddle him skin to skin on my chest.

Since his birth, I have had numerous follow-up appointments with the other members of Chinook Midwives, and the continuity of care has been seamless.

Overall, I feel so fortunate to have been part of the Chinook Midwives family throughout my second pregnancy, birth, and early postpartum experience. My baby and I have received wonderful medical care, and I am so thankful that I was encouraged to have my vision of an empowered birthing experience in the comfort of my own home.
