Boozhoo, She:koli, Koolamalsihmwa! Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples!
In Canada, over 1.67 million people – or 4.9% of the population – identified as Indigenous in the latest census. Indigenous Peoples are the fastest growing group in Canada, up 42.5% from 2006 to 2016.
Despite the growing population and the fact that Indigenous Peoples hold most of the world’s languages, it’s estimated one Indigenous language becomes extinct every two weeks. Languages are central to Indigenous identity, cultures, and worldviews, meaning they must be protected.
At , Indigenous Studies offers courses to learn about Indigenous languages and knowledge, like Introduction to Mohawk, Endangered Languages and Revitalization, Indigenous Literatures, and Indigenous Environments.
A new land-use agreement announced this spring will provide students with learning opportunities to conduct fieldwork using Indigenous perspectives of reciprocity, restoration, and stewardship. The combined course is led by Indigenous Studies instructor Clint Jacobs and Earth Sciences professor Desmond Moser. Connecting for Climate Change Action, a course from the Department of Geography & Environment, uses storytelling to bring Western and Indigenous sciences together to educate, discuss, and motivate action on climate change.

Today is Emancipation Day in Canada. It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, which laid a pathway to freeing over 800,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants from parts of the Caribbean, Africa, and South America and confirmed Canada as a free territory for enslaved African Americans. However, for most enslaved people in British North America, the act only resulted in partial liberation as it only freed children under the age of six, while others became apprentices to be retained. Beyond slavery, many Black people were still subject to other forms of oppression, hate, racism, and violence.
Even today, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour still face challenges of systemic violence and racism in Canada. This fall, Western’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will be sharing three online education modules titled “Building Inclusivity through Anti-Racism”, “Historical Review of Racism in Canada”, and “Transforming Power and White Privilege” to help our community learn about racism, hate, and oppression faced by equity-deserving groups in Canada.
It is everyone’s responsibility to work for justice and reparations. On this Emancipation Day, we acknowledge and recognize the history of enslaved peoples in Canada and around the world. We are committed to dismantling systematic violence and racism and working towards equity, inclusion, and decolonization at Western.
Reminder: our office will be closed on Monday, August 1. We'll be back and ready to support you on Tuesday, August 2, at 9 am! Have a happy and safe weekend!

Twenty years ago, Stephen Lewis, former UN special envoy on the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa, lit a spark that resulted in Western Heads East.
Speaking at a conference held at Western, he challenged the audience to unite and take action against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Western staff, faculty and students answered that call, creating a multi-faceted program based on Western research and collaboration with African partners, that has improved the health and sustainable development of communities ever since.

This Canada Day, we wish you a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
We encourage everyone to think critically about what it means to be Canadian as we work toward Truth and Reconciliation and the elimination of systemic racism and all forms of oppression.
If we acknowledge the historical and ongoing injustices Indigenous People endure in Canada, then we should also reflect on the complexity of celebrating Canada Day post-Truth and Reconciliation, alongside a year of the recovery of thousands of Residential School graves.
We encourage everyone to learn about and reflect on pre-Confederation Indigenous Treaties such as the Dish With One Spoon and Two Row Wampum, as well as the Peace and Friendship Treaties, Indigenous-Crown Treaties, and post-Confederation Treaties with Indigenous Peoples.
To help reveal and correct miseducation, Western has committed funding to develop Indigenous curriculum resources. These six teaching modules, called Learning Bundles, can be used by instructors to incorporate Indigenous worldviews in their classroom.
As part of our commitment to renewing respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, we will join the Office of Indigenous Initiatives in celebrating the opening of the Indigenous Learning Space. This is a hub for Indigenous peoples and learning on campus, with gathering spaces, indoor and outdoor classrooms, and more.
We are proud of the steps Western has taken to begin decolonizing and embedding Indigenous learning into our education and practice and recognize the ongoing work that needs to be done. This work would not be possible without the leadership of our Indigenous faculty, staff and the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
