With much research support from London lawyer John Lisowski, Mark Richardson researched and wrote "On the Beat, 150 Years of Policing in London Ontario". On this day (Feb. 6, 1952) Londoners learned of the death of King George VI and that his 25 year old daughter Elizabeth was now Queen. City churches held memorial services, flags flew at half staff and school children were given lessons on the importance to the Commonwealth of the King's death. The significance of flags at half staff and other symbols of mourning would be explained to the pupils. Many Londoners remembered the 1939 Royal Visit and the hardships of World War II during George VI's reign.
