“Cette série est inspirée par des thèmes de la nature juxtaposés avec des scènes de la vie domestique quotidienne, tirant de mes expériences d’enfance aux Philippines. Les peintures créent un monde surréaliste de souvenirs déformés, rappelant les figures maternelles avec lesquelles j’ai grandi. Tout au long de la création de ces œuvres, les peintures ont servi de journal visuel de mon état émotionnel et mental, m’aidant à comprendre la métamorphose que je traverse.” - Florence Solis

“This series is inspired by themes of nature juxtaposed with everyday scenes of domestic life, drawing from my childhood experiences in the Philippines. The paintings create a surreal world of distorted memories, reminiscent of the mother figures I grew up with. Throughout the creation of these works, the paintings have served as a visual journal of my emotional and mental state, helping me make sense of the metamorphosis I am undergoing.”

Duran Mashaal is excited to announce to solo exhibition of Halifax based artist Dou Wei .lijiw in September, 2024

Over the past five years, Dou’s installations and film have explored the concept of nature as a
transcendent phenomenon, characterized by both uncontrollability and fluidity, as well as the
non-functional attributes of extension and diffraction as manifestations of the natural world. In
recent works, Dou’s focus lies within the realms of painting. Her artworks seamlessly integrate
a plethora of man-made objects based on organic materials, including but not limited to wood
carvings, jade, stone, brass, taxidermy, religious figurines, and relics. These objects are
stretched, distorted, or magnified in part or as a whole, resulting in entirely new, blurred
boundaries within the realm of artificial imagery.

“Grassl uses three-dimensional collages of historical images and other visual material as sketched, cut up, deconstructed and re-staged, leaving partly painterly structures and partly fragmentary forms on white paper. In that way, she balances between time levels, between figuration and abstraction as well as clarity and ambiguity.”

A group exhibition of miniature/small format works featuring the works of Holly MacKinnon .holly

Holly MacKinnon is a Montreal artist, originally from the Hudson/St-Lazare area of Quebec. She is most known for her oil paintings on canvas, though her practice also includes work on paper, watercolor and writing. Most recently, her work deals with ideas of memory, sensory experiences, and the spaces we inhabit.

She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University and has done residencies in Iceland (Fish Factory Creative Centre), Portugal (PADA Studios) and Montreal (Les 7 doigts). She is most known for her oil paintings on canvas, though her practice also includes work on paper, watercolor and writing. Her work has been shown at Wishbone Art Gallery (Montreal), Stewart Hall Art Gallery (Pointe-Claire), McBride Contemporain (Montreal), Rad Hourani Gallery (Montreal), Halifax Archives (Halifax NS), Anna Leonowens Gallery (Haliax NS), and Good Sport Gallery (London ON).

𝓘𝓷 𝓜𝓲𝓷𝓲𝓶𝓪 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓶𝓪 - Group exhibition featuring Emily Weiner

“Emily Weiner (b. 1981 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American painter living and working in Nashville, TN. She received a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University and her MFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Emily Weiner’s paintings consider the art canon through a feminist and Jungian lens. By reconfiguring symbols which have been recycled throughout the history of art, her work questions how archetypal images are shared across generations—and how familiar symbols might be reordered to generate new, collective understanding. Weiner approaches each painting intuitively, and by working in many layers of paint, finds synchronicity in combinations of colors, forms, and symbols. She creates multimedia frames to further demarcate spaces of suspended disbelief in each of her paintings.”

Group exhibition featuring the works of Royal College of Art MA graduate - Chanpeng Li

“Changpeng Li’s works reflect on how the image-centric era has transformed our way of seeing.
The media’s lightning-fast production of images has compressed our viewing time, leading to a visual experience that’s forced into an endless scroll, stripping away the depth of our gaze. As ways of seeing become increasingly flattened, the artist seeks to explore the resulting changes through the medium of painting. Li’s paintings depict media images as a form of camera film. By overlaying perspectives from different image mediums, he invites viewers to recall the sense of alienation, rediscovering those messages that were once forgotten or marginalized. In this process, images from the media are taken back into the darkroom for “development” through painting, revealing their different underlying discursive structures.”

Duran|Mashaal a le plaisir de présenter une exposition de groupe organisée par Rosalie Gamache. In Minima Forma est une sélection d’œuvres à petite échelle et miniatures d’un groupe d’artistes canadiens et internationaux.

L’exposition met en vedette les œuvres d’Andrew Gordon (né en 1980 à Cambridge, au Royaume-Uni). Gordon réalise de petites peintures à l’huile intimes représentant des objets simples et des vues de fenêtres. Il est titulaire d’une maîtrise en peinture de la Rhode Island School of Design et d’une licence en géologie du Pomona College. Il a participé à des expositions collectives à la galerie Annarumma (Naples, Italie) et à My Pet Ram (New York, NY).

Featuring the works by Andrew Gordon (b.1980, Cambridge, UK). Gordon makes small, intimate oil paintings depicting simple objects and views from windows. “Rebecca’s work aims to explore the semiotics of passing time, and the somatic experience of conscious and subconscious memory. Elements of fantasy emerge occasionally, suggesting the psyche’s vulnerability to muddiness, and as a way of offering optical euphemism and allegory. Her paintings implement visual ciphers, which attempt to decode how cycles of trauma, addiction, and power impact a sense of identity and autonomy. She is interested in contemplating how we are often unconsciously at the mercy of these forces, and how they ambiently flavor the nature of our lived experience, as well as our capacity for remembering, both universally and subjectively. Occasionally referencing a collective visual vernacular, in addition to experiences that are deeply personal, her work is as much about reckoning with the oppression of time as it is interested in cultivating a reverence for impermanence.”
