It is important for every dog to know how to wait at the door without the need of a verbal cue. These default behaviours are important for impulse control and safety.

Myth: You need to be assertive for your dog to listen.
Think again! There's no need to yell, add pressure, or intimidate your dog to successfully perform behaviours. The truth is, you can achieve focused engagement with a fast response just from whispering to your dog.
Do you find yourself scolding your dog when they perform an undesired behaviour? Scolding is an example of aversive punishment, which has been proven to be ineffective and increases reactivity.
Using aversive punishment when your dog does something incorrectly increases the risk of your dog avoiding certain activities. With continued use of aversives, your dog will eventually avoid you! Think about it: If you yell at your dog for doing something wrong, they will become stressed. Now that your dog is stressed, why in the world would they want to find a better behaviour? Yelling at your dog for barking can also create the risk of reinforcing the behaviour, which can cause your dog to bark even more.
What can you do instead? Use a Non-Reinforcing Marker! A non-reinforcing marker is a word you use to let your dog know their unwanted behaviour results in nothing of value, or causes things of value to disappear. Because dogs seek reinforcement, they will problem solve and offer a variety of behaviours they think you are looking for. A dog trained this way will continue to offer behaviours until they get it "right.”
I show an example of this training method with Oda in the video below: She knew that touching box 245 was reinforcing so she continued to poke it. When she missed box 245 and hit a different box, I said "oopsie,” which is my non-reinforcing marker. When she heard that word, she knew no reward was coming. If I had yelled "NO!" she would have been too scared to continue. At one point, she missed box 245 several times. When that happened, I continued to say “oopsie.” She kept trying again with more urgency to find the right answer. The second she found box 245 again, I rewarded her!
Always avoid aversive punishment. Instead, teach your dog the skills to succeed. By doing so, both you and your dog will be less stressed.
Make sure you have words to mean “try again” for your non-reinforcing marker and above all else, be patient!

Did someone say it's FRIDAY!
By being less intrusive during your training, your dog will choose better decisions purely because they have more freedom. When a dog does something good on their own, they are more inclined to keep repeating it in the future.
Border Collies always move at warp speed!
Olive "Wha? How does my big sis know how to sit pretty already!"
Here's a concept I've been developing recently. For reactive or anxious dogs there is a prerequisite to fulfilling their reactivity or anxiety and that is "looking" at a trigger. Imagine if you could capture the "looking" and turn it into a simple trick that you can cue your dog to quickly perform, receive a reward, and then move along. Here's a demo illustrating that exact process.
The first issue of my dog magazine cover series is out!
I've been working diligently on an online dog training school that will be open in 2021! It's been a blast to do and of course full of a lot of bloopers thanks to my dog Oda! She's a goof! 😂. Let me know if you're interested in more details about this school. I'm excited to share!
