Roots to Read is a program which will promote and support emergent literacy, crucial to health and development, for every newborn at NRGH.
Literacy is more than just reading and writing. Everyone in a child's life can help develop a love of reading right from birth. Reading, speaking, and singing with your infant, in any language, helps your baby develop the language areas of the brain, as well as a strong connection with you! The Roots to Read program will provide a "book bag" to every newborn at NRGH that will include two new book
Serve and return interactions, such as gestures, pointing, recognizing images, and even babbling, all form deep neural connections within infants. Reading books and singing along to nursery rhymes provide a structured and memorable experience, positively shaping young minds as they explore the world around them!
Do you want to join our Roots to Read Team? We are always on the hunt for volunteers to help package book bags, help organize stock and so much more! Impacting the next generation takes a village.
Do you know any businesses that would be happy to support Roots to Read? We are happy to promote our sponsors.
Thank you.
Did you know that your little one, aged 12-18 months, is capable of recognizing if a book is upside down? Amazingly, they also begin to associate sounds with shapes and animals, proving that their cognitive development is on the right track!
Please consider supporting Roots to Read as we get more books in front of babies.
Be a rock and help support an early literacy start for all.❤️ Run by volunteers and funded 100% by donations. Learn more and donate at https://nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/rootstoread/
How do we decide which books to include in our R2R book bags? Ever since the start of the program, we've always had the goal of encouraging early childhood literacy in a fun and interactive way. We sought to include local authors, one of which, Roy Henry Vickers, a talented local Indigenous artist and author, happily agreed to support the program. His book, Raven Squawk, Orca Squeak provides an interactive reading experience with bright colours and tactile elements on each page.
Thank you Roy Henry Vickers for your continued support of the program!

Congrats to Medical Arts Clinic recently featured in the Early Words bulletin by Canadian Children's Literacy Foundation.
“We remain endlessly inspired by the fact that even in an incredibly busy clinic environment, healthcare providers participating in Early Words clinics across Canada continue to provide support to new parents on how to build literacy skills at home. “
So great that the message now provided at birth with the NRGH Roots to Read program is being supported and reinforced at all the follow up visits in those crucial first years of life (and brain growth)!
