The IGF’s Grégoire Bellois participated in a 3-day National workshop on mine closure and rehabilitation in Burkina Faso organized by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation.
Highlighting that collaboration is key to any successful post-mining transition, stakeholders from different authorities and industries discussed good practices on mine closure and rehabilitation, particularly the social dimension, and shared case studies.

Secretariat staff with the IGF’s Global Mining Tax Initiative (GMTI) recently facilitated a workshop for 25 officials with Tanzania’s Mining Commission. As part of the IGF’s partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), we co-organized a workshop on formalizing artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) to improve environmental, health and safety, and socio-economic outcomes. This workshop was held in Indonesia and supported ASEAN member countries’ interest in better integrating ASM into the wider economy to promote sustainable mining development in the region. “Extracting critical minerals cannot be a race to the bottom” said the IGF’s Marina Ruete this week when presenting the Mining Policy Framework in Argentina. The seminar focused on mining standards concerning critical minerals supply for the energy transition. It included mining ministers from lithium-rich provinces of Salta, Catamarca, and Jujuy as well as speakers from Argentina’s national mining authority and the German Development Cooperation. It was organized by the European Union in Argentina.
Collaboration between government ministries (and other stakeholders) is critical to successful mine closure and rehabilitation. A recent workshop organized by Senegal’s Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition built capacity with key officials and fostered inter-ministerial dialogue amongst participants from various authorities, as well as academia and industry. AWIMA-Association of Women in Mining in Africa
Representatives from the IGF’s Global Mining Tax Initiative (GMTI) recently conducted a scoping mission in Zimbabwe, in partnership with the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF). IGF and ATAF representatives met with 30 officials from mining, revenue, finance, and mineral marketing authorities to identify their priorities. The week-long mission included training sessions on mining fiscal regime design, transfer pricing, mineral valuation, and adapting to the global minimum tax. We recently held a capacity-building workshop for key government officials in Nigeria focused on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and gender equality.
