I was raised within extreme codependency, + the result was as an adult I struggled endlessly with the “feels bads.”

I’d learned that self-sacrifice, fixing, saving, + enabling were ‘selfless.’ And that I was responsible for the emotional states of those around me.

At the root of codependency is lack of boundaries. When we grow up in homes without clear boundaries, we are confused at what’s ‘ours’ or someone elses. Our behavior revolves around attempting not to feel guilty through chronic people pleasing.

Mostly, this means saying yes to things we don’t want to do. Over-extending ourselves. Then feeling resentment. Or regret.

We are so concerned with how we appear to others + how others view us, we betray ourselves. This becomes the cycle.

When I began setting boundaries my heart would race. I would get so nervous. For days before my ego would go into all types of fear based scenarios. With practice, I found that boundaries allowed me to show up as my highest self. And, that those who didn’t understand or crossed boundaries were giving me feedback on their own level of emotional wellness. It was nothing personal. I could hold my boundaries even if someone couldn’t understand them.

When setting boundaries focus on “I” (not what someone else is doing or has done.) Speak objectively: “I would like you to ask before borrowing my things” vs speaking subjectively: “you are disrespectful + borrow things without even thinking of me.”

Avoid over explaining, rationalizing, or becoming defensive (takes practice.) Remember, we aren’t trying to control people’s behavior or give ultimatums— we are speaking then honoring our personal limits.
