Indigenous Students' Union
[email protected] We operate at the University of Saskatchewan through partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
Those partnerships will strengthen us in achieving our aims, but what drives and empowers us are the people we serve on campus. We are an open-minded council and we encourage anyone to join us as we set out to empower and engage the Aboriginal students we serve!

Last Wednesday marked the end of a memorable journey with the Intro to Powwow and Beginner Drum Group classes. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre and Oyateki Partnership for their unwavering support. Our deepest gratitude goes to the participants who made these events a success. These classes provided a platform for students to practice singing and dancing, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and a community where meaningful connections were made.
Students shared how they appreciated the space to learn how to sing and the opportunity to drum. They were taught the basics behind singing, such as how to keep the beat, where to sing from, and the stories behind the drums. The dancers were taught the origins of each dance style and the basics of keeping in time with the drum as they danced. We had multiple guest dancers share their stories with those in attendance to shed some light on what itβs like to be a powwow dancer.
Our final class included both groups coming together to create a βpowwowβ style class with a grand entry, each group dancing their respective category, and finishing with a round dance.
As we mark the end of a successful term, we canβt help but look forward to the next. We are immensely grateful to our facilitators who generously shared their time and knowledge with our students. We are thrilled to announce that both classes will resume in the upcoming 2024/2025 school year, and we eagerly await the return of familiar faces and the arrival of new participants.
Starting this Evening, the ISU will be hosting Study Nights at the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Center.
Snacks are provided, and don't be shy to stop by the ISU office to say hi and meet our members!
This event will be happening from Monday April 8th to Friday April 12th, from 4pm to 9pm!

Did you know that over the weekend, a small group of Indigenous USASK students participated in an Indigenous STEM (Science, Technology, engineering, and mathematics) conference called AISES in Vancouver, B.C?
AISES promotes Indigenous STEM growth through opportunity and community. It is a chance to fuse Indigenous culture and science together into meaningful and practical action.
Did you also know that U of S has a chapter of its own? Pictured are Dylan Bauman (civil engineering), the president of the USASK AISES chapter, with the president of the Indigenous Students' Union Justice Noon (environmental science). Members of the USASK chapter had a great weekend learning, networking, connecting, and exploring many ideas! Our hosts, the West Coast Indigenous, know what's up βπ½π§‘

Presenting the new ISU logo. The idea is to highlight and honor the many Indigenous students who come from different regions of Turtle Island and are currently studying at the University of Saskatchewan. All together, there are 13 different plants incorporated into the logo. Each plant is utilized by many First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people. The concept "All our Relations" include the plant life. These plants symbolize a vital aspect of Indigenous identity through land context. Not only is reconciliation a responsibility on behalf of non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples, but it also embodies a collective journey of reconnection, bridging Indigenous peoples to All our Relations. The plants included are Rat Root (Sweet Flag), Alder, Wormwood, Wild Ginger, Juniper, Wild Mint, Devilβs Club, Chokecherry, False Hellebore, Sweetgrass, Sage, To***co, and Cedar.

Hey everyone! As representatives of the Indigenous students on campus, the ISU are looking for members to take part in an advocacy committee with the USSU. We need 4 Indigenous students, who will be participating with both of the presidents of the ISU and USSU, and the two student councilors of the ISU. Time commitment is twice a month (for now, as we are looking to have this changed to a lower frequency), and you don't need to be a student councilor of the ISU, you're already a member! You have a chance to have your voice heard on what needs to be addressed on campus. Send a msg our way if you are interested.
