📻• This Is An Emergency Broadcast is on now through Saturday, August 10.
A project with artist and activist Marianne Nicolson, This Is An Emergency Broadcast occupies the Belkin space with audio recordings that clarify a history of Indigenous articulation, collective organization and opposition to colonial forces. By playing these audio recordings in the gallery – as they will be played on community radio – they are reified for audiences inside and outside remote communities. The recordings are contextualized by archival images and a reading room provides visual, audio and text sources that connect specific histories to the colonial project more widely and to a history of radio in art.
Please note the gallery will be closed on Sunday, August 11 for a community gathering.

Excited to see our First Nations House of Learning has a fantastic new website! Check it out in our bio
👆🏼
From the Director’s message:
The website has been created to educate and inform First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, staff, and faculty about our array of services and activities, including many campus partnerships, as well as the institutional leadership and representation we provide on a variety of matters.
To that end, I couldn’t be happier with our site, as it will prove to be a valuable resource for years to come.
Highlights include:
The About Us section nicely reflects the work we do, who we are, and the visionary leadership we’ve enjoyed since our inception.
The Student section concisely describes the services, activities, and opportunities we offer Indigenous students, and serves up important information on student resources across campus.
The Campus Engagement section summarizes the many ongoing activities we are involved in, some of which are student-focused while others are institutional-based, as well as further information on specific initiatives.
Finally, the Longhouse section includes a calendar that lists Longhouse events only, which will allow students and others to find them easily via that channel.
So, whether you are an Indigenous student, staff person, or faculty member, or a member of the wider UBC community, we trust you will find this site educational, informative, and, hopefully, inspiring.
Warm regards,
Joely Viveiros, Acting Director

📣• This Is An Emergency Broadcast
June 21-August 11, 2024
For the exhibition “This Is An Emergency Broadcast,” audio broadcasts occupy the Belkin gallery in connection to Ne’nakw (To Return Home), a project with Marianne Nicolson that supports Indigenous cultural practices that recentre the notion of home. In this largely sound-based exhibition, revoiced historical moments reveal the ongoing fight for the recognition of Aboriginal title. “This Is An Emergency Broadcast” connects political advocacy with the forms of communication offered by community radio, countering power chronicles of state and corporate media and, in its self-determination, offering space for reignited narratives.
By playing these audio recordings in the gallery – as they will be played on community radio – they are reified for audiences inside and outside remote communities. The recordings are contextualized by archival images and a reading room provides visual, audio and text sources that connect specific histories to the colonial project more widely and to a history of radio in art.
In addition, Nicolson’s 2018 video installation work “Hexsa’a̱m: To be there always” (with Althea Thauberger) will be installed in the gallery.
And on the Outdoor Screen, “Nuxalk Radio” will play daily between 9 am and 9 pm, a film written and directed by Banchi Hanuse documenting a day in the life of 91.1 Nuxalk Radio, a community radio station established in Q’umk’uts’ (Bella Coola) in 2014 with the slogan, “Lhulhamktulhs ala ts’ktaliwalh alh ti s-kulhulmcilh t’ayc n wa sulutilh ats (Broadcasting the laws of the lands and waters).”
“This Is An Emergency Broadcast” runs from June 21 to August 11, with programming with Marianne Nicolson the weekend of August 10 and 11.

📣• If you find yourself in the Okanagan this summer check out this show by Professor Kevin McKenzie, curated by Dr. Stacey Koosel
H***y Tonk Chapel is open to the public from May 10 - August 22 in the FINA Gallery on UBC Okanagan campus. Please join us for Kevin McKenzie’s artist talk on Wednesday June 5th at 12:00 in the University Theater, and at 5:00 in the gallery for the exhibition opening event.
The exhibition is part of the Indigenous Art Intensive.
There is a great essay about H***y Tonk Chapel by Kevin McKenzie’s original collaborator curator Daina Warren
“Most interesting for this curator is having witnessed McKenzie’s art career develop over a long time, seeing the trajectory of his art practice shift while maintaining integral interests and concepts from his early career. When McKenzie was in Vancouver in the late 1990s and early 2000s he was heavily interested in an industrial aesthetic, involving early punk, rock music, and utilizing metal and organic materials that amalgamated Indigeneity and popular culture. Interested in the Lowbrow art community that was trending on the West Coast at the time, McKenzie was colleagues with folks like I, Braineater and 12 Midnite, a self-professed “Lord of Low Brow” artist. McKenzie followed their art careers closely, rubbing elbows with them at the Helen Pitt Gallery back in its early days. These artists were, and are, known for their rebellious and anarchist traits that McKenzie has embodied in his performances and works in other media throughout his career.“

“Chado, the “Way of Tea,” is basically concerned with activities that are a part of everyday life, yet to master these requires great cultivation. In this sense, this tradition is well described as the Art of Living. Having been nurtured on Japanese soil, it represents the quintessence of Japanese aesthetics and culture; but, over and beyond this, people far and wide have discovered that life is beautified by this Way — by the spirit that guides its practice, as well as by the objects which express that spirit and are an integral part of its practice.” - The Urasenke Foundation
