What does it mean today, in this part of the world, to be an older migrant woman?
Translating Age is a Queen’s University project exploring the experiences of older migrant women in Northern Ireland, using arts-based approaches and co-research approaches, where the women created their own arts projects that are showcased here: https://www.qub.ac.uk/sites/translating-age/projects/
The project has brought together from a wide range of cultures and places, including China, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Malta, South Africa. Each woman has her unique story.
Please, join us for the project launch at Queen’s University on Thursday 23rd May at 6pm – you can register here: http://go.qub.ac.uk/translatingage
We are most grateful for the generous support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI), The ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (ESRC IAA), Engaged Research and Public Engagement Funds, within Queen’s University.
The project was coordinated by Professor Tess Maginess (Director, Open Learning Programme) and Dr Federica Ferrieri (Public Engagement Officer, CESR).

High Distinction for Open Learning tutor

Dr Federica Ferrieri, language tutor and co-ordinator of engaged research projects in the Open Learning Programme, has just been awarded the prestigious Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy merit (Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia).

As Honorary Italian Consul for Northern Ireland since 2016, Federica has been recognized for her outstanding service in the promotion of friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and other countries and the promotion of ties with Italy.

Dr Ferrieri said:

“It has been my privilege to work with so many communities here in Northern Ireland to promote greater understanding of Italian culture and indeed, to foster connections between a wide range of cultures here in Northern Ireland.”

“Working at Queen’s has provided a great support structure for engaging with many communities and sectors in fulfillment of the University’s aim of promoting social and civic responsibility and engaging in real world issues, including the challenges facing migrant people.”

The honour, conferred by the President of the Italian Republic, was presented to Federica at a special ceremony in Queen’s University, by the Italian Ambassador, His Excellency, Inigo Lambertini, on a visit to Northern Ireland which included meetings with business leaders, politicians and members of the Italian community. The visit was co-designed and attended by Veronica Ferrucci, Italian Consul General in Edinburgh.

Dr Ferrieri provides consular advice and guidance to some 2500 Italians in Northern Ireland. In addition to her teaching, she is a book author, life coach and restorative Justice practitioner. She has organised a wide range of events to promote understanding between cultures.

Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas, Pro Vice Chancellor, Arts, Humanaities and Social Sciences, said:

‘I am delighted for Dr Ferrieri and congratulate her on this significant recognition of her contribution to cultural life, both within and beyond the University.’

Within the Open Learning Programme, she has been central in designing and delivering an online intercultural module for the University’s Professional Skills Certificate and an international partnership project, ‘Images of Incoming: Exploring Inclusion and Exclusion with Migrant Women in Northern Ireland and Canada. The programme has involved partnerships with University of Fraser Valley, British Columbia and University of Atypical (Arts and Disability Network). This window in Belfast City Hall tells the dominant story of Ireland in the nineteenth century - the Great Famine. Yet the story of the Famine in Ulster is one which we don't often hear. Join tutor, Dr Robyn Atcheson on her course “Ulster in the 19th Century” as she looks specifically at Ulster throughout the nineteenth century, what made it different from the rest of Ireland and how society and the region itself changed over the course of the century. In this course students will look at primary documents from and about Ulster and explore the main social, political and religious events of the period. From Presbyterians rising against the British to fainting spells during a religious revival, this course uncovers a whole other side to Irish history.
