The month’s JQ building spotlight is 109 Northwood Street, also known as ‘Harper’s Hill Works’. A former metal-working factory designed in c.1882 by architect Thomas Plevins and built for Bent and Parker Military Ornament makers, it consisted of an office and warehouse, together with a four-storey range of workshops to the rear of the building, a pattern that was so commonplace to the JQ.

Plans to transform the four-acre AE Harris site in the Jewellery Quarter have been submitted to Birmingham City Council.

Joint venture partners Galliard Homes and Apsley House Capital are aiming to build a mixed-use scheme of more than 320 new apartments – including lofts and duplexes – and circa 100,000 sq ft of commercial space, creating a new gateway hub in the Jewellery Quarter. At the heart of the scheme is 109 Northwood Street, the former Harper’s Hill Works, and a neo-Georgian factory on the corner of Newhall Street and James Street – these will be preserved.

Calling all seafood lovers! This month’s JQ building spotlight takes us to the corner of Spencer Street and Hockley Street.

Have you ever heard of the Plantagenet buildings in the JQ? Well, you’re staring right at them and you’ve certainly walked past them on many an occasion.

This development is an ornate Italian-style building erected on an arrow-shaped plot of land around 1871. This was a speculative development which originally included houses and workshops. Not much has changed as jewellers still occupy these units with Jewellery being produced here today by a number of individuals. Comment below if you’re one of them and we’ll tag you!
