Sports massage sn’t just for elite sportsmen and women. Yet it is often misunderstood as a treatment modality because “I don’t do a sport”, and “aren’t they really painful”. Quite simply, sports massage can be beneficial to anyone regardless of athletic ability or exercise participation. So whether you are training for a race, visit the gym regularly, enjoy gardening, or have a desk-based office job, a regular sports massage can help to keep your body feeling great, and keep injuries at bay.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁?

Osteopaths’ patients include the young, older people, manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women, children and sportspeople. Patients seek treatment for a wide variety of conditions, including back pain, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries. Many patients visit osteopaths on a regular basis to help manage chronic conditions such as arthritis and to maintain their overall wellbeing. This is because osteopaths are highly people-focused, taking the time to understand every patient as an individual. Building long-lasting, health-improving relationships with patients is one of the pleasures of the profession.

- After 5 incredible years, hundreds of games, multiple trips across Europe, highs and lows, championships won and of course friends made for life, It’s time to say goodbye!

- When I first joined the team little did I know what an impact it would have on not only my professional career but my private too. I can’t thank the Devils enough for the opportunities they have given me over these years. I’ve worked in Pro sport most of my career but this team will always have a special place in my heart. I would do this job forever but I simply don’t have the time anymore with my clinic commitments.

Hockey players are unlike any other athletes I’ve ever worked with. Playing 3 games a week as a normal is unheard of in any other contact sport- so as a therapist you quickly get to know your athletes and each and everyone I’ve had the pleasure of working with has taught me something new! By the end of each new season I’ve always got 20 new friends and I’m a better practitioner and this I will miss!

A special thank you to for putting up with me for the past few years and all the cups of tea on the road and chats about rubbish!!

Thanks to Todd and Lordo for giving me the opportunity 5 years ago when I walked into Todd’s office with not a clue about Hockey and now I love the game!

To each and every player THANK YOU for letting me be a part of your journey!

Good luck to the team this season, you’re in great hands and I can’t wait to watch a game from the other side of the bench!

𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻. A low back sprain or strain can happen suddenly, or can develop slowly over time from repetitive movements.

Strains occur when a muscle is stretched too far and tears, damaging the muscle itself.
Sprains happen when over-stretching and tearing affects ligaments, which connect the bones together.
For practical purposes, it does not matter whether the muscle or ligament is damaged, as the symptoms and treatment are the same.

𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰.The jelly-like center of a lumbar disc can break through the tough outer layer and irritate a nearby nerve root. The herniated portion of the disc is full of proteins that cause inflammation when they reach a nerve root, and inflammation, as well as nerve compression, cause nerve root pain. The disc wall is also richly supplied by nerve fibers, and a tear through the wall can cause severe pain.

𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲. At birth, intervertebral discs are full of water and at their healthiest. As people age over time, discs lose hydration and wear down. As the disc loses hydration, it cannot resist forces as well, and transfers force to the disc wall that may develop tears and cause pain or weakening that can lead to a herniation. The disc can also collapse and contribute to stenosis.

𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀. This condition results from wear and tear of the disc and facet joints. It causes pain, inflammation, instability, and stenosis to a variable degree, and can occur at a single level or multiple levels of the lower spine. Spinal osteoarthritis is associated with aging and is slowly progressive. It is also referred to as spondylosis or degenerative joint disease.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. There are two facet joints behind each disc at each motion segment in the lumbar spine. These joints have cartilage between the bones and are surrounded by a capsular ligament, which is richly innervated by nerves. These joints can be painful by themselves, or in conjunction with disc pain.

The initial osteopathic consultation will start with a few questions to understand what has brought you to the clinic. In discussing your symptoms, your osteopath will first ensure that osteopathy is the correct therapy for you. Otherwise, you may be referred to another health professional for appropriate treatment or for tests or x-rays.

Questions will be about your symptoms and also about your medical history (previous surgery, fractures, sprains, illnesses, treatments and so on). There may be some questions about your lifestyle (diet, employment, sports and hobbies) if this is relevant to your visit.

Your osteopath may carry out a physical examination, and you may need to undress to your underwear. If you prefer, you can wear shorts or loose trousers and a thin top. Don’t hesitate to contact your osteopath if you have any concerns. Your osteopath will perform various tests including blood pressure or neurological tests to be sure that osteopathy is safe for you and your best option. Then they might perform orthopaedic and mobility tests on your symptomatic area and possibly other parts of your body as the source of the symptoms may lie elsewhere.

After the examination, your osteopath will explain the findings to you and will work with you to prepare a treatment plan. You can ask questions at any time during the consultation.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, in line with the treatment plan, will follow. The techniques used will depend on your age, activities, symptoms, and wishes.

𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 may be given at the end of the osteopathic consultation. This can cover, for instance, exercises to do at home, any sports or exercises you should avoid, and other types of advice according to your symptoms and what the consultation reveals.

After the initial consultation, your osteopath will probably suggest a follow-up appointment a few days or weeks later. As a guide, acute symptoms (less than 3 months duration) may require 1 to 2 follow-ups; chronic pain (more than 6 months) may require 3 to 4 follow-ups.

So what do you need to do to book an onsite massage session? Is it for you? One of the comments frequently heard is that it must only be for the larger corporate companies who can afford to put this in place but this is not the case.
There are a variety of options to suit every size of business from being on-site for just a few hours to being there for a few days at a time.

Workplace massage is a highly popular employee perk that also has benefits for business.

A healthy motivated and engaged workforce will be hardworking, make a positive contribution to the business and have respect for its employer leading to excellent customer service, increased productivity and employee satisfaction.

The onsite work-based sports massage is ideal for all employees and of all ages.

Targeting areas of tension and muscle soreness in your back, neck and shoulders, arms and hands, provides relief from muscle aches and pains often aggravated by repetitive strain and posture-related issues.

Adapted to suit you, it can be a firm but relaxing massage or deeper more invigorating, deeper, and stronger. Different techniques will be used depending on what you need and incorporate stretching to encourage movement during your day.

For regular visits, we can advise a treatment plan so as the therapist becomes aware of particular issues the massage will be adapted to address those specifically. All of our therapists are fully qualified in the treatments they provide and will provide you with after-care advice to ensure the benefits of the massage are continued between visits.

Please note that currently, due to Coronavirus restrictions and Government guidelines, additional time is required between appointments to allow for enhanced hygiene and ventilation of rooms. Therapists will also wear PPE and a Covid-19 specific risk assessment will be agreed upon with you before our visit.
