BUDGET special: What does it mean for NHS, local government and schools?

NHS
UNISON head of health Helga Pile:
“A major NHS cash boost is much-needed. This is like the first drops of rain after a long drought. It’s a significant investment that won’t end the problems in the NHS, but will help set a course for how to solve them.

"Services can only expand if there are enough staff to deliver cancer care, diabetes support, mental health care and all the other vital treatments. Experienced health workers must be encouraged to stay and others given the right incentives to join the service.

“This spending commitment must be sustained over the longer term so the NHS can fix the appalling state of its buildings and equipment and secure the workforce it needs to deliver safe, reliable care.

“But there can be no full recovery for the NHS until the crisis in social care is resolved. A national care service would raise standards and improve staffing through boosting pay, so those who need support can get help whenever and wherever they need it.”

Local government
UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards:
“After more than a decade of neglect and underfunding, local councils have been left in a perilous state. The damage inflicted has been deep but the chancellor’s package of support is a start. It will help many authorities hovering on the brink.

“The focus on essential services should spare communities from the most savage cuts and allow local government staff to feel more secure in their jobs. Likewise, the extra help to deal with social care and homelessness, which account for a sizeable chunk of council spending.

“Tackling the scourge of potholes will also be music to the ears of motorists and cyclists who’ve been given a rough ride for years.

“But there’s still a long way to go and councils will be looking for longer-term solutions to end the decline.”

Education
UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards:
“Building an education system that all parents, school staff and pupils can be proud of should be the aspiration of any government.

“Under the previous administrations, school staff were funding equipment out of their own pockets and buildings were collapsing around them. The chancellor’s commitment to start rebuilding the country’s dilapidated school buildings is a promising first step.”

BUDGET response: A grown-up budget to rejuvenate public services and turn the page on Tory failings, says UNISON

UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards:
“Rachel Reeves has hit the reset button, erasing the Tory shambles and misery of the past,"

“This authoritative budget turns the page on the horrible history of the past 14 years. The Conservatives’ toxic combination of austerity, unfunded spending and fake promises to lower taxes left the country in a dreadful state.

“The chancellor’s vision shows economic stability can be restored by investing in the NHS, schools, care and local councils.

“Good quality, well-funded and sufficiently staffed services are essential for a healthy, highly skilled and well-supported population.

“The last government hid the true state of the country’s finances, leaving public services in tatters. No one should have to put up with long delays for treatment, dilapidated schools, roads full of holes, community facilities sold off to prevent councils from going under or a lack of support when their elderly relatives need care.

“By putting up the minimum wage and ending the freeze on tax thresholds, the government has shown it understands the pressures working families face.

“Asking those with deeper pockets to pay more is the right thing to do. Decent public services can’t be delivered on the cheap. It’s important to spend to invest in the UK’s future.”
