Every baby is different! You may sit there with a pregnant friend who is being booted and kicked constantly whilst your baby likes a good old wiggle in the bath at night! Both are fine, it's about getting to know YOUR baby. Similiarly, if you are on your second or third pregnancy, even that baby will have different patterns to their siblings.

From 16 โ€“ 24 weeks you should feel your baby move more and more until 32 weeks. After 32 weeks, movements should stay roughly the same until you give birth.

It's important to get to know your baby's regular pattern of movement. Our Kicks Count Wristbands can help you do this - https://kickscount.shop/ols/products/wristband

Contact your maternity unit immediately if your babyโ€™s movements have changed. This could be an erratic increase or a slow down/reduction. Midwives and doctors are there to help you - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

โŒDon't put off calling until the next day or wait until your next scheduled appointment.

โŒDon't worry about phoning, it's important for your doctors and midwives to know if your babyโ€™s movements have changed. Even if this is your second, third or fourth time of calling. They'll be happy to hear from you.

There's a lot of talk about the strain on the NHS and strike action, so the temptation to use a home doppler "so I'm not being a nuisance" is at an all time high. Kicks Count strongly advises AGAINST buying and using a home handheld doppler, save yourself some money and buy some nice pampering products instead. Your Midwifery Unit is always there for you. Remember:

- Home dopplers can lead to unnecessary stress if you're unable to find a heartbeat.

- You may be falsely reassured if you hear something you think is your baby's heartbeat, but it may not be that you're hearing. There are a lot of blood vessels in a pregnant woman's abdomen, the babyโ€™s heart beating is just one of the things that can be picked up.

- Most importantly, the presence of a heartbeat alone does not mean your baby is well. Midwives are trained to listen for important changes in rhythms and warning signs.

Call you Maternity Unit if you notice a change in your baby's regular pattern of movement, they will give you advice.

Please spread the word, together we can keep mums-to-be and their babies safe.

Feeling your baby move is a sign that they are well.

When should I start to feel movement?

Most women usually begin to feel their baby move between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. A babyโ€™s movements can be described as anything from a kick, flutter, swish or roll. The type of movement may change as your pregnancy progresses.

How often should my baby move?

There is no set number of normal movements. Your baby will have their own pattern of movements that you should get to know. From 16 - 24 weeks on you should feel the baby move more and more up until 32 weeks then stay roughly the same until you give birth.

What shall I do if I notice reduced movement?

If you think your babyโ€™s movements have slowed down or stopped, contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately (it is staffed 24 hours, 7 days a week). Do not put off calling until the next day to see what happens.

Do not worry about phoning, it is important for your doctors and midwives to know if your babyโ€™s movements have slowed down or stopped.

Do not use any hand-held monitors, dopplers, or phone apps to check your babyโ€™s heartbeat. Even if you detect a heartbeat, this does not mean your baby is well.

What if my babyโ€™s movements are reduced again?

If, after your check up, you are still not happy with your babyโ€™s movements, you must contact either your midwife or maternity unit straight away, even if everything was normal last time.

Never hesitate to contact your midwife or the maternity unit for advice, no matter how many times this happens.

Why are my babyโ€™s movements important?

A reduction in a babyโ€™s movements can sometimes be an important warning sign that a baby is unwell. 50% of women who had a stillbirth noticed their babyโ€™s movements had slowed down or stopped.

โ€ข It is NOT true that babies move less towards the end of pregnancy
โ€ข You should continue to feel your baby move right up to the time you go into labour and whilst you are in labour too.
