Be Safe, Be Seen ๐ฆ
As the nights draw in, itโs crucial to prioritize safety during our runs. The first headtorch runs of the season is a great reminder to shine a light on running visibility!
Recent statistics show that pedestrian and runner accidents increase during the darker winter months. In 2022, nearly 50% of all road traffic accidents involving pedestrians occurred in low-light conditions. Many of these incidents are preventable with simple precautions.
Recommended Safety Gear for Dark Night Running:
Reflective Clothing: Jackets, vests, or accessories that reflect light.
Headtorch or body torch: Hands-free options are ideal for illuminating your path.
LED Arm/Leg Bands: Increase visibility to oncoming traffic.
Light-Up Shoes or Shoe Clips: Ensure your feet are visible while running.
Running Belt with Reflective Strips: For added visibility and to carry essentials
Mobile Phone: Always good to have for emergencies.
Letโs make sure weโre seen! Dust off your reflective gear, check those headtorch, and be mindful of your surroundings. Will you be safe and be seen on your next run?

Why are some of our runners wearing our clothes inside out?
We are proud to announce that our running club is supporting If U Care Shareโs Inside Out Campaign! ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
itโs a way to raise awareness and show solidarity with those who might be struggling.
The Inside Out Campaign symbolizes the importance of bringing whatโs on the inside out, encouraging open conversations about mental health and emotional well-being.
The Inside Out Campaign highlights that everyone has struggles, and itโs crucial to talk about them. By turning our shirts inside out, weโre showing that we care and that itโs okay to open up and seek support.

๐๏ธ With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of fell running legend, Joss Naylor. ๐๏ธ
Joss Naylor, affectionately known as the "King of the Fells," has inspired generations of runners with his extraordinary achievements and unwavering passion for the Lake District. His incredible feats, such as completing the traverse of 72 Lake District peaks in 24 hours and 214 Wainwright peaks in seven days, are legendary and will forever be etched in the history of fell running.
Beyond his remarkable physical accomplishments, Joss was a true ambassador for the sport and a beloved figure in the fell running community.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Joss. Your legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of runners everywhere.
Warm Weather Running Tips from Elvet Striders โ๏ธ๐๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
Here are a few running tips we've found useful for managing running in the warm weather. Feel free to add yours in the comments!
โฐ If you can, try to run early morning or later in the day when the temperature is a little cooler.
๐งข Wear a cap to keep your face protected from the sun. You could soak a running cap in water before you set off to keep your head cool too.
โ๏ธ Wear light colors and lighter clothing to help reflect the sunlight.
๐ณ Run in shaded areas under tree cover. Trail runs and local parks are great for this.
๐๏ธ Running along the seafront is usually a little breezier than inland, which can help keep you cool.
๐ฅต Take a little rest now and again to recover and cool down.
๐ Running in hot conditions takes a lot more energy from you, so you may need to adjust your pace and training accordingly.
๐ฟ Have a cool shower after your runs to help bring your temperature down.
๐ง Always try to stay hydrated before, during, and after runs.
๐คฃ Donโt complain, the rain will be back soon enough.
Additional Tips:
๐ Opt for moisture-wicking socks to help prevent blisters caused by sweaty feet.
๐ Include hydrating foods in your diet, like watermelon and cucumber, to help maintain hydration levels.
๐ฌ๏ธ If running indoors on a treadmill, use a fan to keep cool.
๐ฅค Consider carrying a handheld water bottle or wearing a hydration vest for longer runs.
๐ Plan loop routes that pass by water fountains or your home for easy rehydration stops.
๐ Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or overly fatigued, stop running and find a cool place to rest.
Stay safe and enjoy your runs in the sun! ๐๐โโ๏ธ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Updates from the Willow Miners R&R ๐
We are excited to announce that the Willow Miner is back from his well-deserved break, fully restored and ready to cheer the runners on around the Willow Miner route next month! ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
For those who might not know, the Willow Miner is a stunning, large art installation that overlooks the beautiful Woodland Trust at Low Burnhall. This majestic figure adds a unique charm to our trail, making the running experience even more special.
Whether you're a member of Elvet Striders or an enthusiastic visitor, we welcome you to join us in appreciating this incredible piece of art while enjoying your run.
The Willow Miner is ready to inspire and motivate us all as we take on the trails together.
Our trusty willow miner is having some well earned R & R - repair and refurbishment. He's been working hard over the past few years, cheering us runners on at the woodland trust. Don't worry he is in good hands and getting the full treatment as shown in the pictures below
While he is enjoying his makeover our trail race will still be just as awesome as ever, even if he doesn't make it back in time to cheers us on
Happy running everyone ๐โโ๏ธ๐
Willow Miner Trail Race- Transfers and Waiting List
The Willow Miner Trail Race, on Wednesday 24th July, is now full and a waiting list is in operation. If you still want a place in the race, go to the entries page on SiEntries at
https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?event_id=13747 and add yourself to the waiting list. No payment will be taken at this point.
If you are on the waiting list, keep an eye out for an email invitation (check your junk folder too). If you do receive an invitation, you will have 72 hours in which to complete your entry, before the next person on the list will be invited. If you do not respond then it will be assumed that you no longer want a place and you will be removed from the waiting list.
If you are an entrant and no longer wish to run the race, you have two options:
1). Find someone who wants a place and transfer (substitute) your entry. You can do this by editing your entry on SiEntries and following the โSubstituteโ process. There is no need to contact the race organiser. It will be up to the two people involved to settle any payment between themselves. Note also that if the substitution is from an affiliated runner to a non-affiliated runner, a payment of ยฃ2 will be collected when performing the transfer.
2). Contact the race organiser at [email protected] with your name and SiEntries account number, stating that you wish to cancel your place. It will then be offered to the next person on the waiting list. If you cancel in this way, and we are able to resell your place, you will receive a refund, minus a small admin fee (which is charged by SiEntries, not Elvet Striders). Please do not transfer your place (option1 above) if you have already notified us that you are cancelling it, as it will be cancelled anyway once resold to the waiting entrant.
The deadline for cancellation emails reaching us is 13:00 on Friday 19th July, to allow final invitations to be sent out.
The deadline for entries, including transfers and final responses to waiting list invitations, remains 13:00 on Tuesday 23rd July.
If you have any other queries about the race, see the race page: https://www.elvet-striders.uk/2024/06/04/willow-miner-trail-race-2024/, or email [email protected].
