🎬 Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival 🎬
Saturday 19th October
Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel/Hukkunud Alpinisti hotell (Grigori Kromanov, 1979)
📽 A myriad of things could point to Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel not being a good example of Estonian cinema. The alpine setting and the exterior of the hotel originate in Kazakhstan, the film’s cast features a number of Latvian and Lithuanian actors (including a signatory of Lithuania’s Act of the Re-Establishment of Independence), and science fiction is not a genre frequently explored in Estonian cinema – in fact, the film is based on a novel by Soviet-Russian authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (the minds also behind Andrey Tarkovsky’s Stalker). Yet none of this stops the film from being repeatedly listed among the most valuable classics from the country.
📽 Opening with a panorama of stunning mountain views, the film follows police inspector Peter Glebsky as he arrives at the titular hotel in response to a call out – but while the guests he meets do seem to be strange humans, there appears to be nothing to investigate: yet. The accidental all-inclusive holiday is not destined to last – in the modernist maze of the hotel’s hallways, Glebsky encounters phenomena that challenge his understanding of the world. Cut off by an avalanche, he tries to solve what is going on.

🎬 Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival 🎬
Saturday 19th October
Short Film Competition
📽 Samizdat presents a unique and vibrant collection of 17 films entered into our Short Film Competition. Out of the 1100+ submissions we received this year, our curators have carefully selected some of the finest contemporary shorts from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, spanning from Estonia to Kyrgyzstan. For this screening, we have chosen seven of these films, each highlighting the variety and diversity of voices from the region.
📽 This block of shorts includes a dark romantic comedy from Ukraine, an exploration of Kazakhstan’s search for a new national identity, and a Moldovan film about intersex people and the stigma they are exposed to. These films offer a hard-hitting glimpse into the most pressing social, political and cultural issues in Eastern Europe and Central Asia today.

🎬 Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival comes to Summerhall this Saturday! 🎬
The first screening of the night is Animations of the late Eastern Bloc (1980-1997)
📽 ‘Take a kilogram of ideas (if possible, not too confused), fifty kilograms of talent, and a few thousand drawings. Stir it well and then with a bit of luck you won’t get the right answer to your question.’ – members of The Zagreb School of Animated Film
📽 Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival 2024 is proud to present the second instalment of bizarre, eerie, and unique animated films from the late Eastern Bloc (1980-1997).
📽 A surgery is performed on a bust of Joseph Stalin, a yeti living in the mountains of Kazakhstan gets to listen to The B-52s, a school of vengeful fish attacks a seaside village, and a man pawns his face to buy a lottery ticket – this is a collection of some of the most dreamlike and thought-provoking shorts from a time and place where the animated image served as a stage for radically unprecedented artistic and political expression.

🌈 HER by Jennifer Adam 🌈
Strange Town
8-10th October
🌟 HIM and HER. They go way back. Pals since babies and totally inseparable. Until they weren’t. Loosely reconnecting at high school, they’re now 17 and barely recognise each other. What can guys and girls really have in common anyway? How could they possibly understand each other now? After everything that’s happened? He’s seen some things. And she’s about to. Now, they’ll need each other more than ever.
🌟 HER is a play about the damaging effects of gender inequality, the truth about consent and asks, how can you be the change you want to see in the world, when you feel like the world is fighting against you?
🌟 Following a successful run in 2023 Strange Town Touring Company are excited to revive this play which feels more relevant and vital than ever. The show is part of a series called the Future is Unwritten, issue-based plays that raise awareness, provoke discussion and stimulate debate.
