Hendersons - Eat Better Live Better is a new restaurant started by Barrie Henderson in 2021
The original Hendersons on Hanover Street first opened in 1962, as an outlet for the produce for Janet and Mac Henderson’s organic East Lothian farm. It since became an iconic part of the Scottish food and drink scene for the last 58 years - unfortunately due to covid-19, Hendersons of Hanover Street, had to cease trading and close it’s doors, much to the dismay of it’s long standing customer base
A huge thank you to everyone who supported us in the local neighborhood Chili Cook-Off! 🎉 We’re thrilled to have gotten 3rd place with our vegan Chili. It was an amazing experience, and we’re so proud to show that plant-based can pack a punch! 🌱🔥
A big shoutout to Dougie from Lupe Pintos, all the competitors and everyone who came to taste our Chili for making it such a fun and special event! Can’t wait for next year!

One of our favourite annual traditions and this year our lovely Cath is even wearing the official merch! It’s organised by the amazing + independent business Lupe Pintos. They have ten different local restaurants, bars and pubs compete for the chilli crown!
It’s crazy, chaotic and so much fun! Of course, we are proudly representing the vegans and vegetarians with our vegan chilli. Today’s a total team effort and everyone is contributing:
🫘Our head chef created a vegan 5 Bean Chilli topped with a spicy creamed corn, cashew sour cream, fresh kiwi, jalapeños + smoked pineapple tequila jam and a homemade tortilla crisp.
🌺Our bartender team came up with delicious drinks, including a Hibiscus Margarita made with dry hibiscus petals + syrup, Tequila Reposado and fresh lime juice!
🎊Our lovely front of house team, led by our fantastic Laura, is providing the professional + warm service we all love.
We’re also open for our usual lunch, although you might see lots of punters in colourful outfits enjoying themselves. Everything will be back to normal by dinner and we are looking forward to see you 🌱

For August, we have extended our opening times to make sure you have more time to eat in the evening. We also continue to have our weekday £10 lunch deal on, so you can get a delicious + quick bite to eat if you’re off to see some shows!

If you’re looking for a quick lunch during the Fringe, join us for our £10 deal. It’s quick, it’s healthy and most important, delicious!
This week our open sandwich is topped with Coronation chickpea, made with our homemade vegan mayo, apricot, mango chutney, pickled chillies, fresh salad + toasted almonds.
You can have it with either soup or salad and it will definitely fill you up 🥰
These are our irresistible Nduja + mascarpone arancini, handmade by our chefs who serve them on a whipped blue murder creme, with a delicious walnut + chervil pesto and hot honey.
As always, our chefs make sure that our dishes aren’t just full of flavour but also healthy ingredients.
For example our chervil pesto is made out of walnuts, slowly roasted to bring out all the flavour but maintain their healthy aspect. Walnuts are known to reduce Cholesterol and are full of Omega-3. Chervil on the other hand is full of minerals like calcium.
And although these are Nduja arancini, of course we use a vegan paste, which is made out Italian chillies. The great thing about chillies is that they are antioxidants, full of vitamin C and get your metabolism going!
We hope you’ll enjoy this scrumptious starter, which is also gluten-free!
Bringing the summer to you with this delicious Sicilian Caponata, toasted pine nuts, herby polenta cakes + green cashew sauce.
Caponata is a traditional Sicilian dish made out of aubergines, courgettes, peppers + other lots of delicious vegetables. We top it with our green cashew sauce that is also made with lovage grown in our back garden.
Caponata is often served alongside fish but we of course serve it with our delicious + crunchy herby polenta cakes that not only make this dish vegan, but also gluten-free.
It’s a really delicious summer dish and we hope you will come and try it at lunch or dinner with us soon ❤️

Haggis is not only Scotland’s national dish but also our most popular.
It was Barrie’s grandmother who developed the original vegan recipe in the post-war years - she was always very keen on creating meals out of local and healthy ingredients.
Haggis has always been an important meal in Scotland - making the most of the ingredients available - and Janet helped to translate this into a vegetarian & vegan version long before it was the norm.
We’re really proud to be still serving a dish that Barrie’s grandmother originally developed 60 years ago - of course there has been some small tweaks over the past, for example we serve it now with a vegan whisky tarragon sauce. However, we still make it completely from vegetables, pulses and oats - no meat substitutes required.
It truly is a dish ‘evolved from seeds of the past’.
One of our favourite times of the year is when is holding their annual conference in Edinburgh and we get to feed amazing artists and delegates!
For three days in a row, we’re supplying salads and hot food and while at it, get to visit some of the amazing music venues Edinburgh has to offer.
Wide Days is doing a lot for the Scottish music scene, the independent music venues and small businesses like us by running this conference - so thanks a lot for including us again this year ✌️
It’s not an easy time for any small and independent business at the moment and we’re so thankful we get to support one another in Scotland!

There’s a new player in the game - our blue flower Earl Grey vanilla tiramisu.
This is the epitome of a light and delicious dessert - the perfect finale for a dinner at our restaurant.
Our pastry chef Mariana has created this dessert with Earl Grey which is giving this traditional dessert a beautiful floral twist - while also supporting another fellow small + local business.
And just in case you were wondering, the lady fingers are homemade + gluten-feee.

We mostly talk about our food here but we actually put as much love and dedication into our drinks.
From when we opened, we didn’t want the drink list just to be an add on but a continuation of our ethos and skills.
We therefore have an extensive list of original cocktails crafted by our amazing team of talented bartenders.
We love to use fresh fruit and herbs in our drinks and enjoy different pairings of flavour.

We’re very sad to hear of Dave Myers’ passing. He was a lovely warm man and a great advocate of British food culture. When the Hairy Bikers came to the original Hendersons for its 50th birthday, it was a lot of fun and we will always remember that day fondly.
Our vegan Biscoff cheesecake is a real labour of love.
Our amazing pastry chef Mariana was experimenting a long time until she was happy with the perfect taste and consistency and her perseverance has really paid out. This delicious treat is now one of our most popular desserts - for our vegan, vegetarian + omnivore customers alike.
It’s the perfect example that eating vegan doesn’t mean you have to miss out on flavour or joy!
Chef Anna has been tidying up the beds in our wee kitchen garden this week and we are going to get some seaweed and compost in them to help get them fertilised and ready for the spring. We are going to focus on the edible flowers and fresh herbs that we use in our kitchen and bar mainly, as it is so good to have a fresh supply of these straight from the garden to give the best flavour.
We are so lucky to have our kitchen garden at the back of the restaurant and we hope one day to have an even bigger one.
Our sandwich of the day: our take on Sabich - a Middle Eastern sandwich with chargrilled aubergine, fava bean hummus, chutney, lettuce, and egg (non-vegan and vegan on request though!)

We wanted to let you know that we are closed today and back open tomorrow at 5pm due to our staff party.
After an incredibly busy festive season, we believe it’s really important for us as a team to get some time off together and a chance to let our hair down.
Our staff work really hard, especially during the times when other people are off to celebrate, so we want to make sure they also get some time off together, which is rare in hospitality.
We’re really sorry if you were wanting to eat with us today or tomorrow lunch! We will be back tomorrow evening with our delicious food and fantastic staff!

We are super excited to be able to bring back our vegan + vegetarian Burns Night for the third time at Hendersons in 2024.
This year, we are collaborating with Slow Food Edinburgh, the global, grassroots movement that is all about linking the enjoyment of food with a commitment to community and the environment.
You will be able to enjoy a three course Burns menu, including of course, our Haggis, which we have been making in Edinburgh since 1962 - making it the World’s first veggie haggis.
On top of that, we will have poetry, song and the address to the Haggis from Fergus, and live traditional Scottish music from Euan Johnston.
Tickets are £44.50 per person and also include a glass of Prosecco or mocktail on arrival. They are on sale in our webshop here: https://www.hendersonsrestaurant.com/shop

Hey, we are looking for some local folk music in Edinburgh for our Burns Supper at Hendersons Vegetarian Restaurant.
It’s on the 25th Jan from 5-9pm. We have a poet / singer who will be also be performing already booked. Pay is negotiable and you get a free meal and a drink on the night. You could play 2 x 45 mins sets but we are very flexible. It will be a relaxed affair.
