So I thought it was about time I actually introduced myself!

I am Chantelle MacNeil, owner at GDB Glasgow. Although I now specialise in helping women in the beauty & wellness industries create successful businesses, I have experience across a wide range of industries from manufacturing to retail.

I have created 4 businesses and sold 11 in the last 10 years. I started my first business at 18 years old, supported by The Princes Trust where I now teach and support other young people to start their business 😁

Some facts you may not know about me!

💜 I grew up in the Shetland Islands
💜 I have 2 children + 3 step kids
💜 I'm married to a Barra man 🫶
💜 I started my first business at the age of 18
💜 I've had a business fail - but I dealt with that
💜 I spent 4 years in the Merchant Navy
💜 I have brittle bone disease (but I'm a tough cookie 🍪)
💜 I have lived a bit of a mad life but I wouldn't change one second of it. Life lessons and all that ✌️

So many women I speak to have tried so many businesses, jumping from one to the next without really giving the original idea time to take off. The minute they realise the money isn’t flowing in and they are actually working long hours and losing money, they give it up and go back to the drawing board.

If you want to really make your business a success, you NEED to be focusing on your commitment to your business. Here’s 3 ways to do that.

💗Consistency & discipline: You need to be consistently working towards your business and maintaining a disciplined work ethic. Be disciplined in your boundaries; you wouldn’t offer people money every time they asked – well your time is money.

A key part of planning a business is your target customer and market.

I have so many businesses come to me and when I ask them who their target market are they say 'I want to cater to everyone' and it's always a bubble that is difficult to burst. People seem to lack understanding on why they can't market to everyone.

Well in shorter terms; if you want to market to everyone that's great, but I hope you have millions laid aside for your marketing plan and a tonne of items to offer. Think McDonald's scale.

I'm presuming (or most certain) that you don't and wouldn't want to spend that amount on marketing because you are essentially dropping a hook into a massive sea of fish and hoping one will bite. Not a viable marketing strategy for a small business.

You want to know who your customers are so you can find out:
Why they want to buy
What they want to buy
Where they want to buy
What are there pain points
How can your services fit into their lifestyle

If you know all this information you will know what services they want, how to offer it and where you should focus your marketing to reach them. Niche marketing 100% maximises your return on investment and as a small business you make knowing and learning about your customer base/ target base a priority.

A lot of people starting out will chose to utilise platforms to launch their business on, attracted by the potential ease of obtaining clients or customers and the ease of setting it up. This is a great starting point, however as you start to grow you should really be considering getting your own website.

There are many benefits and if your serious about really growing your business, having full control of how you manage and promote it is essential. Putting all your eggs in one basket, especially a basket you don't own, is a brave move.

This is a process I have implemented with almost all of my service based clients who are feeling both overwhelmed and are drowning under their never ending list of DM's on social media, and the results are instant.

When we dived deeper into why clients where sending DM's post-service over 80% of them couldn't remember what their aftercare was or had a FAQ like why is my skin falling off!😅

Creating the PDF's can be a pain but then they can easily be updated and also added to your website for clients to see before they book a service.

The only issue we sometimes encounter with this is making sure the emails aren't going into their spam - how to solve the issue? Get clients to add your email to their email list.

When learning how to run a business, making sure you've got some education is important but it's not the be all and end all.

I didn't start learning most of my business knowledge until after I had left school and actually dived into owning my first business.

The life & business experience I have gathered over the years, that is most valuable to me and my clients, has been learned through sheer hard work, determination and a TONNE of bad decisions...but also a tonne of good ones!

But real life decisions have been the main building blocks that have got me to where I am today. I'm now able to help my clients avoid all those bad decisions AND support them to make lots of good ones!

Being able to offer my clients the reasoning behind making these decisions is MASSIVE in helping them to really invest in a strategy for success in their business.
