Episode 3: Melissa Heywood
Melissa shares her thoughts on what it is to be a beginner when it comes to climate justice, about getting outdoors, getting connected, and the knowledge amongst us to make work in sustainable ways-how we don't need to be the first or duplicate what others are doing, but can provide one another with the support, hope, and awe we urgently need.
Drafted following a series of conversations and research activities undertaken by the Groundwork working group, they are intended as offers for The Work Room artist-members and the organisation to consider as part of approaches to greener working practices, environmental ethos/policies and sustainability in light of the climate emergency.
More about Melissa Heywood (she/her):
Melissa is a contemporary dance artist from Scotland and a founding member of The Grounding Project; a multinational dance collective working within the environmental arts sector, to share the stories of our planet and its people. The collective aims to encourage wellbeing through dancing and reconnecting with nature whilst galvanising support for climate activism through their art.
Recognising a lot of inaccessibility in the language we use when talking about sustainable practices, climate change and other environmental topics, Melissa is motivated to contribute to the creation of accessible resources that address the implementation of sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in the dance industry. She will share the movement practices that she has developed through her research which focus on understanding ecology through an embodied practice that draws on our innate human responses to nature.

EHY- EHYY! 💃🏽🎶
A big thank you to everyone who came along to our Dance, People & Placemaking event at Civic House the other week, celebrating some of our fantastic BEYOND Projects and engaging in discussion about the role of dance in community and placemaking.
🚞🫂We hosted a hybrid digital and in person sharing from Penny Chivas & Stefanie Hellewell Baird, reflecting on their project on Orkney and the importance of building trust and relationships with community over time
💃🏽🍉Got sweaty whooping, stamping and clapping along as Nancy Ahmar facilitated some of us in learning the Dabke, a dance of joy and resistance from Palestine & Lebanon.
🎸🚸 We heard from Aya Kobayashi & Jer Reid, who shared reflections on Collective Endeavours intergenerational project 'A Wee Open Floor Day' and the different approaches to community, horizontal hierarchy and decision making modeled within dance and music improvisation
🏡🌳And Kirstin Halliday shared insights and film footage from their project in the Langside Estate with Anya Sirina & Rosie Roberts, and their approach to working hyper locally with neighbors and the way this shifts relationship to people and place.
Big thanks to:
Glasgow Connected Arts Network for co-presenting with us and welcoming GCAN members into the day!
Civic House for the lovely space to gather
Parveens for a delicious team lunch after a busy morning of hosting.
Everyone who entered our raffle! We raised £57 for the Al Harrah Theatre. (And congratulations to Our Raffle Winners Natasha Gilmore and Kirstin Halliday!)
✨ In the studio: Laura González ✨
In this 1 week studio residency, Laura is developing a tabletop hand dance for a new intimate performance called Corazonada (hunch, or heart wisdom in Spanish). The work is about intuition and other manifestations of what she calls ‘illegitimate forms of knowledge’. These are ways of knowing that often bypass the rational, the cerebral and the productive and involve entering into an object rather than moving around it. Other core features of the heart way of knowing are softness, quiet, deep listening, connection and attention to the subtle.
Laura will share some of what she has been developing each day online - follow https://www.instagram.com/soma.psychic/

Taking the Temperature - workshop & sharing with Aniela Piasecka
Monday 4 November | 12.30 - 4.30pm | The Work Room
Aniela will be leading this event based on research into their solo work development based on a practice Aniela is calling 'taking the temperature'. As part of the afternoon event Aniela will first lead a workshop that endeavours to create space for exchange and sharing through movement, offering a space where diverging needs, desires, and sensibilities might coalesce to create different ways to experience the body in space. The class will be structured around guided vocal invitations based on a range of somatic movement techniques chosen to support experiences of chronic pain and to enable participants to gain greater consciousness of their own internal worlds.
After the workshop Aniela will then share the work-in-progress performance with a chance to chat afterwards.

PRO CLASS with Guest Artist Rosalind Masson 💥
📆 Friday 11 October | 9.30am to 10.45am | Kinning Park Complex
In this class we will tune into our movement capabilities by sensing our whole body and how it’s connected to the floor and to gravity.
We will explore the movement of different parts of the body: arms, legs, head, chest and pelvis, to increase awareness and possibility for movement expression. This freedom of movement will then be explored in the context of movement phrases signature to Rosalind’s choreographic language which she has been developing since 2010.
Material can be adapted to whatever level and improvisation forms a big part of the approach to movement informed by Rosalind’s time at Movement Research in New York and her work with Laborgras in Berlin.

We will look at how our creative practices can support and hold us and we will examine what the role of choreography and composition have in sustaining us through times of particular pressure, and more generally, in the political systems we live in."
