One of the important issues of debate during the University of Westminster and Kings College Symposium on media and children was the luck of programming that depicts children that have moved and settled to European countries in complex ways. They are mostly represented as refugees, if at all. Another important finding from EU funded research is the luck of programming that engages with the ethnic and class complexity of our societies. In fact, production of content that acknowledges and represents the ethnic diversity of European societies has dropped over the past 10 years with most programming trying to appeal to an ideal Caucasian mainstream audience. This is of course a strategy of maximising profits. Important research, that tries to link media strategies to the way we learn or do not learn about diversity.

Liu Xiaobo, Nobel laureate and political prisoner, dies at 61 in Chinese custody 13/07/2017

A sad day for democracy, for human rights, for China and for the world. The man that became the symbol of resistance and the voice of freedom in China has died in an isolation unit from liver cancer with the Chinese government refusing the simple gesture to let him out to die at home with his beloved wife. Perhaps his fate signifies more than anything else, the fear of the regime for voice, for resistance and determination to fight on for justice and freedom.
