Hope you are all doing well and enjoying a bit of a break!
We are holding a social (π) at 10:30am on Sunday 24th April, where we will be going for a walk down the Ouseburn (and treating ourselves to a hot chocolate!). It will be a really relaxed event, just to catch up with you and see how everyone is holding up. It'll also be a great chance to ask us any questions if you are interested in joining our committee at our upcoming AGM later in the semester. We are meeting outside of the front of NUSU at 10:30am.
You can sign up on our NUSU page here https://www.nusu.co.uk/getinvolved/societies/society/6856/?, under 'Activity Sign-Ups' (just so we know to wait for you!).

HAPPENING TOMORROW πππ
BLACK HISTORY MONTH - CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF TRAILBLAZING BLACK ENGINEERSπ
As part of Black History Month, EWB Newcastle are celebrating the achievements of some incredible black engineers throughout history. Our hope is that engineering can become more diverse and open to all, which is why outreach and widening participation are central to our society's activities.
πππ±
The first great figure in our series is Elijah McCoy.
McCoy was born in Canada, the son to parents who had fled slavery. Taking an interest in mechanics from an early age, he travelled to Scotland at aged 15 for an apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.
Returning home to Michigan as a fully certified engineer, he was unable to find work as an engineer in the US due to racial barriers, instead taking a position as a fireman and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad.
It was in this role that McCoy invented an automatic lubricating device, improving efficiency in the system of oiling axles and allowing trains to run continuously for long periods of time without maintenance. For his lubrication device, McCoy received his first patent in 1872 and it went on to be used for long distance locomotives, transatlantic ships, and factory machines.
McCoy went on to hold a further 56 patents for his inventions and is often, though perhaps incorrectly, attributed to the origin of the phrase "the Real McCoy" for the reputation of his machinery.
