Oral Traditions in the Archives: Archival Research into Traditional Song
Nov 10, 2021 4:00 PM Dublin
Archives of oral culture present unique challenges for archivists and researchers alike. This seminar has the format of a round table discussion on different aspects of traditional song in the archives. Steve Roud is renowned as the creator of the Roud Index, and has spent much of his career working with traditional song archives. Martin Greabe is the author of several books on traditional songs, including As I Walked Out: Sabine Baring-Gould and the Search for the Folk Songs of Devon and Cornwall. Grace Toland is a singer and organiser with the Inishowen Traditional Singers' Circle, and also works at the Irish Traditional Music Archive. The role of song and performance archives to fuel contemporary tradition, weaves continuously throughout projects and events she organises.
The discussion will be jointly chaired by Kara OâBrien, Irish World Academy PhD researcher in traditional song, as well as Academy Director Dr Sandra Joyce.

BROADSIDE DAY Saturday 20th February 2021 - Call for Papers
For more than 10 years, the BROADSIDE DAY, organised jointly by the Traditional Song Forum and the EFDSS, has been the gathering place for people interested in street literature and cheap print - broadsides, chapbooks, prints, tracts, penny histories, woodcuts, and so on. Our meetings have been held in London, Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Sheffield, and Glasgow, and next yearâs was to be in Birmingham, but it seems clear that physical meetings will be impossible for some time to come. So in 2021 we will be online. The exact details have yet to be finalised, but the date is fixed. The upside of the situation, of course, is that we can hope for papers from people who canât normally travel to the UK, so we should have an exceptionally good line-up this year.
We would therefore be pleased to receive submissions for 20-minute papers on any aspect of cheap print and street literature. Closing date 15th December 2020.
There is an interesting looking online panel on current folk music scholarship happening on Friday 18th December 'Katherine Jackson French: Kentucky's Forgotten Ballad Collector' and 'From California to Hollywood: tracking Sam Larner from the trawlers to the Silver Screenâ Followed by Q&A. sign up below
