A three day basic course on animal bones in archaeology (Understanding Zooarchaeology I) run by the zooarchaeology team at the Department of Archaeology University of Sheffield as well as a less frequently run two day more advanced course (Understanding Zooarchaeology II). We also sometime run more specialised zooarchaeologycourses such as "marine resources" and "palaeoenvironmental indicators"

Following the recent rewarding experience of our September short courses, we are happy to announce that registrations are now open for our next short course: ‘Understanding Zooarchaeology II’ (2nd-5th April 2024).
‘Understanding Zooarchaeology II’ is a more advanced version of our foundational course and is ideal for professionals, students and enthusiasts who have attended ‘Understanding Zooarchaeology I’ or already have a basic knowledge of Zooarchaeology. During this four-day course, participants will have the opportunity to practice the identification of closely related species, of working on a real archaeological faunal assemblage, and will be provided with suggestions concerning how to write their own faunal report. This past week our short courses - Understanding Zooarchaeology I and Human and Animal Remains: A Comparative Approach - have been back for the first time since the Covid crisis and the cultural vandalism perpetrated against our department. It was very exciting for us and yet again we had a wonderful group of participants. 📢📢On the 16th of January there will be the special release of a short film about the Sheffield Zooarchaeology Team and the reactions of staff and students to the announced closure of the Department.
We would like the film to have much exposure to make sure that this despicable act of cultural vandalism is not forgotten and that we will be able to learn from it. On the day of its release please do like and share it as widely as possible. Thank you.
