How would you prepare for an emergency?
It can be hard to think about what could happen in the worst of circumstances. But there is a new government website that helps us all to prepare for emergencies.
Being signed up to Community Messaging is a great start because if there was an emergency incident North Yorkshire Police would be able to send you a message directly – to warn and inform.
In a newly launched website, the government is encouraging people to think about what they would do if they and those around them were exposed to risks ranging from floods to fires to power cuts.
The website provides simple and effective steps people can take to be more prepared: Prepare - Prepare
Taking action now will make it easier to manage an emergency if it does happen.
Five simple things you can do now:
1. Find out if you are eligible to sign up to your gas, electricity and water supplier’s Priority Service Registers, so your provider will know if you need additional support.
2. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to check your smoke alarm once a month.
3. Write down important phone numbers on paper such as the number to report a power cut (105) and the numbers of anyone you might want to contact in an emergency.
4. Talk to your children about how and when to call 999 and what they should do if there’s an emergency, such as a fire at home.
5. Check your long term flood risk and sign up for flood and weather warnings - Sign up to receive flood warnings by phone, text or email.
Haxby Town Council are aware of the latest outbreak of antisocial behaviour in and around the Haxby area. While these incidents are relatively few in number,
we are actively engaging with the police to see how we can help to bring these unacceptable behaviours to a halt and bring the perpetrators to book.
Our advice is to keep reporting these incidents to the police either on 101 or online. This will enable the police to commit more resources to our area.
Do not hesitate to ring 999 if you think the situation is serious.
We wish those harmed in these incidents a full and speedy recovery.
Working together with our ward councillors, police, schools, and bus companies we will keep Haxby a safe and happy place to live.
Good morning, we have found a bag at mancroft park this morning, (we won't post a picture as if you have lost it you can tell us what it looks like). Please contact Haxby Town council office to arrange pick up.
WhatsApp Scams!
WhatsApp group chat members are being warned they could be targeted by criminals, as Action Fraud reveals it has received 636 reports from victims of the messaging app this year.
The fraud often begins when a member of the group receives a WhatsApp audio call from the fraudster, pretending or claiming to be another member of the group. This is done to gain the individual’s trust, and often the scammer will use a false profile picture and/or display name, so at first glance it would appear to be a genuine member of the group.
The fraudster will tell the victim they are sending them a one-time passcode which will allow them to join an upcoming video call for group members. The criminal then asks the victim to share this passcode with them so they can be “registered” for the video call.
In reality, the criminal is asking for a registration code to register the victim’s WhatsApp account to a new device so they can take over their account.
Once the fraudster has access to the victim’s WhatsApp account, they will enable two-step verification which makes it impossible for the victim to regain access their account. Other members of the group, or friends and family in the victim’s contacts, will then be messaged asking them to transfer money urgently as they are in desperate need of help.
How to secure your WhatsApp account:
· Set up two-step verification (2SV) to give an extra layer of protection to your account. Tap Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.
· CALL. If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person outside of WhatsApp to confirm their identity.
· Report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. Press and hold on the message bubble, select ‘Report’ and then follow the instructions.
If you live in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and have been a victim of fraud or cybercrime, report it at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, victims of fraud and cybercrime should report to Police Scotland on 101.
