The SIJ: What You Need to Know
🦴 All About the Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) 🦴
The SIJ is crucial for shock absorption at the base of the spine, but when it’s not functioning properly, it can cause pain that feels like sciatica.
🤰 Pregnancy Alert: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make the SIJ more mobile, potentially leading to discomfort. A strengthening routine can help manage this!
🔄 Treatment: Your osteopath will assess your condition and create a tailored plan focusing on mobility and strength.

Treating Plagiocephaly with Safe Sleep in Mind
Severe plagiocephaly cases may need helmets to reshape the head, but mild cases often improve naturally. However, it’s important to continue following safe sleep guidelines by placing your baby on their back to reduce the risk of SIDS. If neck tightness (torticollis) is a factor, osteopathy can offer relief, helping your baby move more freely.
The Effects of Plagiocephaly – What You Should Know
While plagiocephaly is typically painless and improves over time, it’s good to keep an eye on your baby’s head shape. Some studies have suggested links to developmental delays, though this isn't always the case. Our osteopaths are trained to assess for craniosynostosis, a more serious condition where skull joints fuse early. Catching these signs early can ensure your baby receives the care they need.

Understanding Plagiocephaly & Torticollis in Babies
Plagiocephaly is a condition where a baby’s head becomes misshapen, often flattening on one side. It can be associated with torticollis, which is when one side of the neck is tighter, limiting movement. This causes babies to rest on one side of their head more frequently. If your baby has a flatter back of the head, it may be brachycephaly. Early awareness is key, and gentle osteopathy may help!

🔍 What is Piriformis Syndrome? 🔍
Piriformis syndrome is a form of sciatica caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, often due to tension in the piriformis muscle, located deep in the gluteal region.
🦵 Common Symptoms:
• Shooting pain from the buttock down the back of the thigh
• Tingling or pins and needles
• Weakness in the affected leg
These symptoms can worsen with certain movements, leading to a frustrating cycle of discomfort.
💡 Management: Osteopathy can help relieve tension in the gluteal muscles and address underlying causes. Regular exercises can strengthen the area and improve mobility.
