At Gundicha Temple Brahmin temple servants offer the puja instead of daitas(ଦଇତାପତି), the traditional non-Brahmin servitors of Jagannath who are excluded from worship. Though devadasis generally function as agents of Lakshmi, they offer worship in the Gundicha Temple in the same manner as in the main temple, while Lakshmi is left behind in a storeroom in the main temple. This connotes a different context to the role of the devadasis in the Gundicha Temple. Another unusual feature is that the images are smeared with larger quantities of sandalwood paste, twice a day, as a "cooling agent" (as is commonly done to the goddess Gundicha). Every day of their stay in the temple, the deities are decorated with new dresses.

ପବିତ୍ର ଦେବସ୍ନାନପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା ର ଅନେକ ଅନେକ ଶୁଭକାମନା 🙏
Greetings on the auspicious occasion of

🌸 Rituals and Ceremonies 🌸

Deva Snana Purnima also known as ‘Snana Yatra’ is an auspicious bathing festival for Lord Jagannath devotees. It is observed on the Full moon day of the ‘Jyeshtha’ month (ଜ୍ୟେଷ୍ଠ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା).

During this ritualistic bathing ceremony, the deities of the Jagannath Temple, namely, Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra are taken put from the ‘Ratnasimhasan’ରତ୍ନ ସିଂହାସନ) of the Jagannath Puri Temple, early in the morning and escorted in a procession that is witnessed by thousands of devotees, and brought to the ‘Snana Bedi’ or the Bathing altar. This procession is called as ‘Pahandi'(ପହଣ୍ଡି).

The water used for bathing the deities is taken from the well, present inside the Jagannath Temple(ସୁନା କୂଅ). A total of 108 pitchers of herbal and aromatic water are used to bath the three main deities of the Jagannath Temple.

During the ritualistic Snana Yatra, the deities get fever and take 15 days solitary confinement(ଅଣସର). The Ayurvedic medication ('pnachan') administered by the Raj Vaidya the Gods recover in a fortnight and resume appearing for public viewing only 15 days after, that is, the day just before the famous Rath Yatra, only after getting reenergized.

At this time three pata chitra paintings(ପଟ୍ଟ ଚିତ୍ର) are displayed for devotees to view instead and devotees head to the Alarnatha Mandira(ଅଲାରନାଥ ମନ୍ଦିର) in Bramhagiri in the belief that Jagannath manifests as Alarnatha during this period.

As mentioned in the ‘Skanda Purana’, King Indradyumna arranged this bathing ceremony for the first time, after the deities were installed in the Jagannath Temple.

The ceremony is observed in a traditional way with full grandeur and is also one of the most anticipated rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple. Some even observe this festival as the birthday of Lord Jagannath.

Read the caption about the origin and meaning of this unique Odia festival that is being discussed a lot these days because it aims to break a few taboos in the society.

ବନସ୍ତେ ଡାକିଲା ଗଜ, ବରଷକେ ଥରେ ଆସିଛି ରଜ,ଆସିଛି ରଜ ଲୋ ଘେନି ନୂଆ ସଜବାଜ.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL: It is believed that the mother Goddess Earth undergoes menstruation during the first three days.

The term Raja came from the Sanskrit word 'Rajas' which means menstruation and when a woman menstruates, she is called 'Rajaswala'. In medieval times the festival became popular as an agricultural holiday, for praising and worshipping mother earth. A silver idol of Bhudevi is still to be found in the Puri Temple beside Lord Jagannath.

The first day is called Pahili Raja, second is Mithuna Sankranti, third day is Bhu daaha or Basi Raja. The final day is called Vasumati snana, in which the ladies bathe the grinding stone (Sila Pua) as a symbol of Bhumi, with turmeric paste and adorn it with flower, sindoor etc.

All type of seasonal fruits are offered to mother Bhumi. The day before first day is called Sajabaja or preparatory day during which the house, kitchen including grinding stones are cleaned, spices are ground for three days. During the festival women and girls take rest from work and wear new Saree, Alata (ceremonial red liquid), and ornaments. It's one of the most popular among numerous festivals in Odisha. (Source: wikipedia)

Floral swings or 'Raja Doli', Paan (pronounced Paana in Odia) and Odia sweatmeats and Pithas (some are a type of steamed, stuffed cake) such as the exotic and tasty Poda Pitha (a cake made by baking it from both top and bottom) add more colour and taste to the celebrations.

Raja is truly a celebration of Odianess. The state Odisha, it's rich culture and tradition, it's simplicity and its unique and progressive ethos.

Akhaya Trutiya is celebrated in the Hindu calendar as the birth of Sage Parashurama. On this day the construction work of the three chariots begins. The chariot construction work is carried out by seven groups of carpenters and artisans as per the tradition and lineage. A special group of ‘Dasapalla’ carpenters has the hereditary right for the construction of the chariots for the Holy trinity.

Beautifully Captured by

This day is very auspicious and it is believed that any work that is started on this day turns out to be successful.

This Hindu temple can be dated with fair accuracy by the use of inscriptions that were originally on the temple. They are now lost, but records of them preserve the information of around 1058 CE. The temple is built in the 18th regnal year of the Somavamsi king Udyotakesari by his mother Kolavati Devi, which corresponds to 1058 CE.

A sadhu named Manohar Das, from a faraway land wished to get a darshan of Mahaprabhu. He was a great devotee of The Lord and was very anxious to see him, so crossed mountains, forests, rivers and decided to walk all the way to Shrikshetra. As soon as the night fell, the sadhu would look for a nearby math or temple for the night’s stay.

He would resume his journey the next day. Once while walking, he was very thirsty. He could not find any village or temple nearby so kept walking in search of water.Suddenly he found a beautiful pond and started to quench his thirst from the pond’s sweet water. He felt really satisfied drinking the pond’s water. He was awestruck to see that the pond blossomed with beautiful Lotus flowers. This sight was a rare sight in Winter season. Without further ado he picked up the Lotus flowers, wrapped them in a small cloth and started to go towards ShriKhetra again. The Sadhu reached Puri in the month of Magha, on a Amavasya night and went to Shrimandir without any delay. And at first he got the darshan of Chaturardha Murti near Garuda Stamba and was over joyed seeing it. Then he gave the Lotus flowers to the people at the Lord’s service so they could offer it to the Mahaprabhu.
On seeing the dirty towel of Manohar Das and the dry Lotus flowers, the Pujapanda sevak scolded him and told him that only fresh flowers and Tulsi Leaves are offered to Mahaprabhu and compared them to the dry flowers that he brought. The sevak told that these flowers were completely useless and threw them. Therefore,Manohar Das was deeply hurt.He collected those flowers and left Shrimandir in a hopeless manner and became unconscious near the Badachata Matha on Badadanda. The Devotee Loving And Caring Mahaprabhu understood the feelings of Manohar Das.He appeared in the dream of Gajapati Maharaj and said,"Oh King,My devotee has been insulted by the Sevaks and is lying unconscious near the Singhadwar. I order you to immediately meet him and bring the flowers he has brought an
