Earlier this year, the United Nations voted to declare July 11 an annual day of remembrance for victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.
Bosnian-Dutch activists have been campaigning to raise public knowledge about the 1995 Srebrenica genocide and the Netherlands’ role in the UN peacekeeping mission Dutchbat that failed to prevent the mass killings of Bosnian Muslims.
On this day, Humanity in Action highlights Democracy Fellow Nedim Hadrovic's project 'Sarajevske Debate' — an ambitious youth-led initiative based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina that seeks to revive critical discourse and counteract the political manipulation of historical memory.
In times of high polarization, intolerance, and rise of right-wing extremism, we reflect on remembrance dates like this and question the role of our government in such events.

25 years of promoting dialogue. What does that mean?
- Fostering mutual insight has the power to bridge divides and stimulate brave spaces and community cohesion.
- In such polarized times, it is more important than ever to go into dialogue with one another and to strive for social inclusion.

Humanity in Action The Netherlands is off on Keti Koti.
On July 1, we commemorate the abolition of slavery. The Netherlands one of the last European countries to abolish slavery and end its role in the slave trade.
Our office takes the day off to reflect on the history of slavery and its implications, not only in the Netherlands, but worldwide.
Here's a commemoration guide with events happening in Amsterdam on Keti Koti.
THANK YOU, 2024 FELLOWS! ❤️
We're still over the moon with our Amsterdam Fellowship closing ceremony, where our Fellows blew us away with their sensitivity and kindness. In short duo presentations, they told us about their learnings and had one last moment of bonding as a group.
Thank you for your passion and enthusiasm, and for inspiring us with your energy.

Last weekend, our 2024 MBO Jongerenteam in collaboration with the Anne Frank stichting, met for the third weekend of the program. This weekend took place in Arnhem, and focused mainly on Action Projects, through fun interactive sessions. The group reflected on social issues they consider important and want to take action on. The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled on Friday, May 24, that Israel must immediately cease the attack on Rafah, allow humanitarian aid, and do more to protect Palestinians.
The International Court of Justice is the main judicial body of the United Nations, dealing with disputes between states. The case against Israel was initiated by South Africa. Rulings of the court are binding for every state that is a party to the court, including Israel.
The Hague internationally profiles itself as the City of Peace and Justice. Beyond the International Court of Justice, the city also houses the International Criminal Court. The Dutch constitution states that the government must actively promote the advancement of the international legal order.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas is an unprecedented disaster. Sign one of the many petitions calling on the Dutch government to press for a ceasefire.

The Jongerenteam 2024 program has started ✨
In March and April our , in collaboration with the Anne Frank Foundation, met for two weekends. During the first weekend in Amsterdam we got to know each other, visited the Anne Frank House, and learned about making impact from the inspiring former Jongerenteam member Ayesha Noelle.
On the second weekend we explored the theme of democracy and the rule of law in The Hague. Big thanks to the Jongerenteam participants for their enthusiasm, and we look forward to the upcoming weekend in May ❤️
Tensions in Dutch society have been high in recent weeks regarding the National Commemoration Day on May 4. As a result, unprecedented measures have been taken in advance, especially regarding the commemoration ceremony on the Dam. These include the prohibition of banners and flags, which goes against Article 7 of the Dutch constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech.
How can we truly remember and learn from the past, if we do not face present tensions and concerns?
Remembrance is also a reminder to never repeat the same mistakes again. This includes the prohibition of censorship and protecting the right to protest, fundamental rights that are now threatened.
We must ask ourselves: how can we promote a culture of commemoration if we don’t let the lessons of the past guide our actions of today?
